In return it makes a small room feel less boxed in — no slab of door front, no swing arc to keep clear — and it suits a dressing corner, a landing recess, or a room where a door would open into the bed. Through a dry winter you may hear a small tick from a joint, or see a hairline gap where two pieces meet; that closes again in milder weather. A rattan panel can loosen very slightly in its frame for the same reason, and it settles. The real everyday difference with an open wardrobe is dust: the top surface and the shoulders of your clothes need a wipe and a shake more often than they would behind a door.
