It is 900mm wide and 980mm tall, so five drawers sit on a small footprint. The trade is height: the top surface is at 980mm, above worktop height, so it takes a lamp rather than a tray of things you want to look down at. It is 500mm deep, and that depth is what makes the drawers hold real clothes — it is also why a narrow box room with the door swinging in is the wrong place for it.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Nine hundred wide and nearly a metre tall. A 500mm carcass means an open drawer projects most of that again, so allow around a metre from the face of the chest to whatever stands opposite it — the bed, the radiator, the door swing. At 900mm wide it will not go through a standard door face-on; it goes through turned, and at 54kg that is a two-person carry.

See it before you buy

A photograph will not tell you how the drawers feel on the way out, or how the weathered colour shifts across the boards under a real light. Both want a hand on them. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you. What is out changes from one week to the next, so if this chest is not among it when you call in, ask for it — the store room is behind us, and anything we do not have to hand we can get in within a few days. Get directions

Living with it

This is timber, and timber moves. Through a first heating season a drawer that ran sweetly in September can feel tight in December; that is normal, and it eases again in spring. A new drawer is stiffer than one opened a thousand times, and the runners bed in over the first few weeks. The weathered colour is not uniform by design, so expect variation board to board. Keep it off a radiator wall, wipe it dry, and if a drawer ever feels wrong to you, email us and describe it.

<!-- SEPTEMBER OFFER BLOCK — insert here when the Bedroom Event pricing is confirmed; remove on 1 October.
