Put a 250 or 280mm mattress on a divan base and the top of your bed sits around 650 to 700mm off the floor — well above an ordinary bedside, so you spend every night reaching down and behind you for the lamp. Over a winter of heating it loses a little moisture and shrinks fractionally; over a damp spring it takes some back. You notice it as a drawer that runs freely one month and needs a firmer push the next, and occasionally as a fine line where two pieces of timber meet. None of that is damage — it is the material doing what it has always done. A new drawer is also tighter than an old one and eases within weeks. Keep it out of the direct blast of a radiator, and lift water off the top rather than letting a glass stand.
