It does not disappear — it anchors the wall it stands on, and clothes read against it with more contrast, which is either the effect you want or the one you do not. It is a good choice in a room that already has a pale floor or pale walls and nothing to hold it together. Practically, the smoked finish hides dust for longer than a natural one, which counts for something on a piece with no doors.
