It belongs to the Wycombe range. The single wide drawer is the thing worth opening before you make up your mind, and the Ballincollig showroom is where to do it. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

This is a one-drawer table, and the drawer is unusual: 870mm wide, 305mm front to back and 71mm deep inside. That is a tray more than a box. It suits someone who wants everything laid out flat and visible in one pull — brushes, palettes, a laptop, papers, chargers — rather than someone who wants things stacked and hidden. If you need volume, a chest of drawers is the right piece and this is not. At 400mm deep it holds tight to a wall and works in a small room, and at 1100mm it is the shortest of our dressing tables, which helps on a tight wall. The top is 800mm off the floor, so plan on a taller seat, not a dining chair.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “That drawer is 870 wide and 71 deep. Put it beside a bed and you will be reaching across the corner of the mattress every morning — check that first. The 1100mm width fits between most bedroom obstacles, but measure out from the skirting rather than from the plaster, and check the 800mm top clears a window board or a radiator shelf if it is going under one.

See it before you buy

Black is the finish people most often get wrong from a screen — some blacks read soft and some read hard, and a photograph settles nothing about how an 870mm drawer runs when you open and close it. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, no appointment needed, and nobody will rush you through it. What we have out changes as the floor is rearranged, so if this table is not among it when you call in, ask for it: it comes up from the store room, or in within a few days. Get directions

Living with it

Two things to expect. Black holds dust and fingerprints in a way light wood does not — a dry microfibre cloth once a week is the whole job, and a wet cloth or a spray polish leaves streaks that will annoy you more than the dust did. And because you build this one yourself from mixed materials, the parts settle at different rates: MDF stays put while oak and pine move a little with the heating season. Go round every fixing about a month after it is built and tighten anything that has come loose. A new drawer runs stiffer than one opened a thousand times, and it frees up on its own.
