Two drawers, 550mm to the top, black all through.

This is the two-drawer bedside from the Acton range, built in MDF and rubber wood and finished in black. It stands 550mm high, 450mm wide and 400mm deep — a small piece that is meant to sit tight against the side of a bed rather than fill a corner. It belongs to the Acton range at our Ballincollig showroom, and we can have it out for you to pull both drawers before you decide anything. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

Height is the number that matters beside a bed, and 550mm suits a low or mid-height frame — one where the top of the mattress lands somewhere around 550 to 600mm. Beside a deep divan set, where the mattress top can sit at 650mm or more, you will be reaching down for the lamp switch rather than across. The top is 450 by 400mm, which is honest about what it holds: a lamp and a book, not a lamp and a book and a glass and a tablet at once. Most people take two, one each side, and the black reads as a deliberate dark note in a light room rather than something trying to disappear.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Bring the base measurement of your lamp with you. Half the bedsides that come back are fine — it’s the lamp that was never going to fit on a 450 top.”

What you’re getting

  • MDF and rubber wood construction, black finish
  • Two drawers
  • Internal drawer size 344 × 380 × 142mm — the same in both
  • 176mm of clearance underneath
  • 550mm to the top surface, 450 × 400mm of top
  • Indoor piece — not for a conservatory floor or a porch
  • One box, 18kg

Measure first

The width is easy. The gap between the bed and the wall is the one people get wrong.

Dimension mm cm
Width 450 45
Depth 400 40
Height 550 55

A drawer 380mm deep needs most of that 380mm in front of it to come fully out, so allow a walking gap of at least 450mm beside the bed if you want to open it standing up. Check the height of your bed base and mattress together before you order, not the base alone — that is the measurement this piece has to live with.

See it before you buy

A photograph will not tell you how heavy the drawer feels on the way out or how the black finish reads under a warm bulb. Twenty minutes with it in front of you settles both. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you. We rearrange the showroom constantly and only part of the range is up at any one time, so ask for this bedside by name when you arrive — if it is not out we will bring it up from the store room, and if we are short of one we will have it in within a few days. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie before you travel and it will be ready when you get here. Get directions

Living with it

The drawers are stiffer on day one than they will be in a month — that is a new runner with no wear in it, and it loosens with use rather than needing anything done to it. Rubber wood is a timber, so it gives off and takes back a little moisture across the heating season; small movement in a joint is normal and settles. Black shows dust and fingerprints more plainly than a pale finish, so keep a dry soft cloth in the drawer and give the top a wipe when you change the bed. Do not stand it hard against a radiator.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks from the day you place it, and we confirm the delivery date with you before you pay anything.

We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. It arrives as one box at 18kg, which is a two-hand lift but a one-person job.

Our data does not record an assembly position for this piece, so we will not guess at it — email us before you order and we will confirm exactly what state it arrives in.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

What actually fits in a drawer?
Each drawer is 344 × 380 × 142mm inside. A hardback lies flat, a charging cable and a plug sit alongside it, and reading glasses in a case fit on top. A stack of folded jumpers does not.

Can I get a vacuum head underneath?
There is 176mm of clearance to the floor, so a standard upright head and most cylinder heads go under without moving the piece.

Will it be too low beside my bed?
At 550mm it works beside a frame bed. Beside a divan with a deep mattress it will sit below the mattress line — measure to the top of your mattress first.

Do the two drawers differ in depth?
No. Both are the same 142mm inside, so it does not matter which one you give to books and which to everything else.

Is the white version the same piece?
Same dimensions, same drawer sizes, same construction — the finish is the only difference.
