A small white bedside that holds more than it looks.
The Acton two-drawer bedside in white: MDF and rubber wood, 450mm wide, 400mm deep and 550mm to the top. Two drawers of equal depth do the work, and the white finish keeps it quiet in a room that is already busy. The Acton range lives at our Ballincollig showroom, and we can have this one out for you to open. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.
Who it’s for
White earns its place in a small bedroom — a box room, a converted attic, a room with one window on the wrong side of the house — because it gives back light instead of taking it. The top is 450 by 400mm, so plan for two objects on it rather than four. At 550mm high it sits well beside a bed frame; beside a divan with a deep mattress it will read as low, and you will be reaching down rather than across for whatever is on top. Bedsides are usually bought in pairs, and the pair is what makes a narrow room look settled rather than improvised.
Chosen by Paul
Paul says: “White is the finish people choose for a child’s room and then keep for years. Just know that a wet glass leaves a ring on any finish, white or not — use a mat.”

Measure first
Two measurements decide this: the gap beside your bed, and the height of your mattress top.
| Dimension | mm | cm |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 450 | 45 |
| Depth | 400 | 40 |
| Height | 550 | 55 |
The drawer box runs 380mm front to back, so it needs roughly that much clear floor in front of it to open fully. If the bedside has to go into an alcove or between the bed and a wardrobe door, measure the 450mm width with the wardrobe door swung open — that is where the pinch usually is.
See it before you buy
Whites differ. The only way to know whether this one sits happily with the white already on your walls and skirting is to see it in daylight, and the second thing worth doing is pulling a drawer all the way out. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), seven days a week, no appointment, no hurrying. What is out gets rotated week to week, so this bedside may or may not be up when you call in — say which one you came for and we will lift it out of the store room, or order one in for you within a few days. If you are making a journey of it, email info@mulberryhouse.ie first and we will have it ready. Get directions
Living with it
Give the drawers a fortnight of daily use before you judge how they run — new ones are always tighter. Rubber wood moves slightly with the seasons, so a joint that feels marginally different in February to how it felt in September is doing what timber does. A pale finish shows a mark sooner than a dark one, which is a fair trade for the light it gives back: wipe spills as they happen with a barely damp cloth and dry it after, and put a coaster or a small tray where the glass goes. Keep it out of direct sun on a south-facing wall if you can, and away from a radiator.

Questions people ask
Is there room for a book and a lamp together?
On a 450 × 400mm top, a small lamp and a paperback share the surface comfortably. Add a glass of water and it is full.
How deep are the drawers inside?
344 × 380 × 142mm, both of them. That takes a hardback flat, a charger, a small notebook and a pair of glasses without stacking.
Can I clean underneath without moving it?
Yes — 176mm of clearance is enough for a vacuum head, and at 18kg you can also slide it out easily when you want to do the job properly.
Would it suit a child’s room?
The height suits a standard single frame, and there is nothing sharp about the shape. Two shallow-ish drawers hold the small things a child accumulates beside a bed.
Does it match the black one?
They are the same piece in two finishes, same size and same drawers, so a black one and a white one on either side of a bed will be identical in every way but colour.
