Three full-width drawers in a carcass only 450mm deep.

The Acton 3 Drawer Chest in white is 870mm wide, 870mm high and 450mm deep, made from MDF and rubber wood. It sits in our Acton range, and we can have one out for you in Ballincollig if you want to open it before you commit to a colour. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

The depth is what recommends this one. At 450mm it does not jut into a narrow room the way a deeper chest does, and white gives a small bedroom back a bit of light that a dark piece takes away. It suits a box room, a converted return, a room where the walking space between the bed and the wall is measured rather than guessed. Be honest with yourself about that walking space, though: the drawer box is 430mm deep and comes that far out, so the chest occupies close to 900mm of floor the moment a drawer is open. And white asks a little more of you than black does — marks show first around the handles, in a child’s room especially.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “White shows the marks around the handles before it shows them anywhere else. That’s not a fault, that’s a white chest. A dry cloth once a week and you’ll never think about it again.”

What you’re getting

  • MDF and rubber wood, finished in white.
  • Three drawers of equal size.
  • Internal drawer size 760 × 430 × 194mm.
  • 450mm deep front to back — the shallowest measurement on the piece.
  • 172mm clearance underneath.
  • Anti-topple kit included, to be fixed to the wall.
  • One box, 47kg gross.

Measure first

Measure the wall, then measure the floor in front of it. The second one decides whether you can use it.

Dimension mm cm
Width 870mm 87.0cm
Depth 450mm 45.0cm
Height 870mm 87.0cm

At 450mm deep it passes through a standard door and up most staircases without drama. The number to watch is the 430mm the drawer travels into the room. Put a tape down and mark 430mm out from the wall: if that line lands on the bed, the chest is on the wrong wall.

See it before you buy

White is the colour hardest to judge from a screen, because every screen renders it differently and every room lights it differently. Daylight settles it in about ten seconds. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968 — seven days a week, no appointment, and nobody will stand over you while you open drawers. We change the display around, so this chest is not always among the pieces up that week: ask for it, and it is either a minute away in the store room behind, or a few days away if we have to bring one in. Living with it

Expect the drawers to be tight for the first few weeks. They are new, the runners have not worn in, and they loosen with use rather than with force. Board and timber move a little across the year, so a drawer can run differently in a damp October and a heated January; that is the material behaving normally, not a fault. For the finish, keep to a dry cloth and avoid anything with a solvent in it, because that is what dulls a white surface over time. Anything still bothering you after a month of ordinary use, email us.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow roughly four weeks. Delivery across Cork and nationwide, or collect from the showroom at no charge. We agree the date with you before you pay.

One box, 47kg gross. Two people for the stairs. There is no assembly note published for this chest, so if you need to know precisely what happens when the box is opened, email us first and we will check it and tell you.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

Will it fit in a small room?
It is 450mm deep, which is shallow for a chest of this width, but it is still 870mm wide. Measure the wall before the room.

What goes in a drawer this size?
760 × 430 × 194mm inside. A full set of double bed linen — fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet cover, pillowcases — folded flat, with room over it.

Do the handles show marks?
On any white finish that is where hands go, so that is where you will see them first. A dry cloth deals with it.

Is the wall fixing necessary?
The anti-topple kit comes in the box and is meant to be screwed to the wall. With children in the house, treat it as part of the assembly rather than an option.

Can I see under it to clean?
172mm of clearance to the floor.
