The Ashdown bedside is the lightest and lowest piece on this page: 400mm square, 500mm to the top, MDF and melamine on an iron leg frame. There is one drawer, and 370mm of open air underneath it. Who it’s for

This suits a low bed and a small room. At 500mm it is the shortest bedside we list, which makes it right beside a low platform or futon-style frame and wrong beside a divan with a deep mattress, where the top would sit well below the mattress line. The top is only 400 by 400mm, so be realistic: a lamp and a glass, or a book and a glass, but not the three of them. What it does better than anything else here is disappear — the legs lift the whole box clear of the floor, so a small room reads as less full than it is. People generally take a pair, and a pair of these takes up far less visual room than a pair of solid boxes.

Measure first

Small enough to squeeze in almost anywhere, which is the point of it.

The drawer runs 360mm front to back and needs that much clear space in front to come out fully. The height is the real check here: measure from the floor to the top of your mattress, and if that figure is much over 550mm this piece will sit too low to be useful. It is the one to consider when the gap beside the bed is under 450mm and everything else is too wide.

See it before you buy

The thing worth checking in person is the leg frame — how it meets the floor, and how steady the whole piece feels when you pull the drawer. That is a hand test, and a photograph cannot do it for you. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968). Living with it

Check the leg fixings after the first fortnight and again after a few months. Anything that stands on legs works loose a little as the floor and the frame settle against each other, and a turn of the hand at the right time keeps it solid for years. On a carpet, expect one leg to want packing before the piece sits dead level. The drawer will run more freely once it has been opened a few hundred times. Melamine wipes clean with a damp cloth, but do not leave water standing on any edge or joint.

Assembly is legs only. The body arrives built; you fit the leg frame and stand it up.

Questions people ask

Will a vacuum go underneath?
Yes, comfortably — 370mm of clearance is more than any household head needs, and you will not have to move the piece to clean under it.

What fits in a 90mm drawer?
W360 × D360 × H90mm holds a paperback or a hardback lying flat, a charging cable, a small notebook and glasses in a case. Anything that has to stand upright will not.

How much assembly is there?
The legs, and nothing else. It comes in one box.

Is it too small for a main bedroom?
Beside a low frame in a room where floor space is short, it works. If your bed is high, or you want a lamp and a book and a glass on the top at once, look at something wider than 400mm.

Is it stable enough with the drawer open?
That is exactly the sort of thing worth testing with your own hand rather than reading about. Ask for it by name when you call in and we will have it out for you to try.
