Table height, 400mm deep, and it fits under a window.

The Ashdown chest is 900mm wide and 750mm high, which is table height, and it is the shallowest chest we list at 400mm front to back. It comes to us on its own rather than as part of one of our named bedroom ranges, in a natural finish, and it can be seen at our Ballincollig showroom. Who it’s for

The proportions do the arguing. At 750mm high it slides under a window sill where a taller chest would not, and the top becomes a usable surface at worktop height — a lamp, a plant, a tray. At 400mm deep it takes very little of a narrow room. The trade-off is inside: the drawers are 158mm deep, which is shallow. Shirts, t-shirts, underwear, folded bed linen and towels all go in. A thick winter duvet does not. Being honest about it, this is also a hall or living room piece as much as a bedroom one — the height and the shallow depth suit a hallway wall where a deeper chest would be in the way.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Seven-fifty high is table height. I’ve sold these to people who came in for a bedroom and put the thing in the hall, and not one of them came back sorry.”

The same chest. Only the room changes.

What you’re getting

  • MDF and MDF melamine with an oak veneer, with iron and rubber components.
  • Three drawers, each 868 × 360 × 158mm inside.
  • Stands on 150mm legs, giving 150mm of clearance to the floor.
  • The legs are the only assembly — the carcass arrives built.
  • Anti-topple kit supplied, to be fixed to the wall.
  • One box, 40kg gross.
  • Natural finish, indoor use.

Measure first

Two numbers matter on this one: the 900mm width, and the height of whatever is above it.

Dimension mm cm
Width 900mm 90.0cm
Depth 400mm 40.0cm
Height 750mm 75.0cm

If it is going under a window, measure from the floor to the underside of the sill and leave a little over 750mm. The drawer box is 360mm deep and comes that far into the room, which is less than most chests ask for, but still measure the floor in front. A 900mm width will not turn a tight corner on a landing without being tipped on edge.

See it before you buy

Height is the thing you cannot judge from a photograph, and 750mm is the whole point of this chest. Put your hand flat on the top and you will know in a moment whether it is right for the wall you have in mind. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968. Seven days a week, no appointment, and nobody will hurry you. The showroom gets changed around week by week, so ask for this chest by name: if it is not out it is not far, the store room is behind us, and if we are short of one we will have it in within a few days. Living with it

Fit the legs with the chest on its back on a soft surface, and tighten them evenly rather than one at a time. Then check it standing: older houses rarely have a level floor, and a chest that rocks slightly is usually the floor rather than the chest. A new drawer runs stiffer than a well-used one and eases off over the first month. Veneer and board both react to the heating season, so a drawer can feel tighter in a dry room in midwinter and settle again after. Wipe the top with a dry cloth, and email us if anything is still not behaving after a few weeks.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. The date is confirmed with you before you pay.

Assembly is legs and feet only; everything else arrives built, in one box at 40kg gross. Two people is still the sensible way to bring it in.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

Will it go under a window?
It is 750mm high, so measure to the underside of the sill and leave a little clearance above the 750.

Will a folded duvet fit in a drawer?
The drawers are 158mm deep inside. Bed linen and towels folded flat, yes. A thick winter duvet, no — that needs a deeper drawer or a bed with storage under it.

How much has to be assembled?
The legs, and nothing else. The body of the chest comes built.

Can it go somewhere other than a bedroom?
Yes. At 400mm deep and 750mm high it works along a hall wall or in a living room.

Does it need fixing to the wall?
An anti-topple kit is included and should be fitted. It matters most in a house with children, who climb open drawers without thinking about it.
