Who it’s for

This is the tallest bedside we list, and the only one with nothing to hide things in. Both facts point at the same person. The 665mm height suits a high divan with a deep mattress, where a 550mm bedside would sit uselessly low; it will look tall beside a platform frame. And with no drawer, whatever lives beside your bed lives in plain view, which is fine if that is a lamp, a book and a glass and less fine if it is chargers, tablets and everything else. The 460 by 460mm top is square rather than oblong, so a round lamp base sits centrally without overhanging. A pair either side of a high bed is the usual arrangement, and being open underneath, two of them weigh far less on a small room than two chests.

Measure first

Height is the whole decision on this one.

Measure from the floor to the top of your mattress. If that figure is around 650 to 700mm — a divan base with a deep mattress, or a high frame — this table lands where you want it. If it is 500mm, this will stand a good head above the bed and look wrong. Nothing pulls out, so there is no drawer swing to allow for; 460mm of floor is all it asks.

Black takes the light across a grain in a way no photograph gets right, and 7.5kg is a weight you have to lift to believe — both are two-second jobs in person and impossible on a screen. Living with it

A light piece in solid timber on a hard floor will find the one spot where it rocks; move it a few centimetres or pack it and it settles. Expect small seasonal movement once the heating is on daily — timber takes on and gives up moisture and a joint may look slightly different in January to how it looked in September. That is normal and it comes back. With no drawer to take the wear, the top is the surface that ages, so use a coaster and dust with a dry soft cloth rather than a spray. Keep it out of long direct sunlight, which will lift a dark finish unevenly over years.

Why is it taller than the drawer chests?
665mm against 600mm. It is built for a higher bed, and the height is the reason to choose it.

What fits on the top?
460 × 460mm takes a lamp, a book and a glass without crowding. A square top also suits a round lamp base better than a narrow oblong one does.

Is it heavy to move for cleaning?
7.5kg, so no — lift it aside, vacuum, put it back.

How is it different from the brown one?
Identical size and weight. The brown version requires assembly; no assembly position is recorded for the black.
