Who it’s for

The assembly is the reason to choose this one. A chest a metre wide and a metre tall that arrives built is a problem on an old staircase; a chest that goes up in a box and is put together in the bedroom is not. If your house has a tight turn at the top of the stairs, a narrow return or a low ceiling over the landing, that matters more than any other fact on this page. Once it is up, it is a main-bedroom piece: four drawers in two depths, 71mm and 142mm inside, the shallow ones for shirts and t-shirts laid flat, the deeper ones for jumpers and folded linen. What it will not do is act as a dressing table — at 1040mm the top is a standing-height surface.

Measure first

Measure the finished piece for the wall, and the working space for the day it arrives.

You need a clear floor to build it on: allow a couple of metres of open space and a blanket or the flattened carton under the panels so nothing gets scratched. Once it is standing, the drawer box comes 376mm out into the room, so leave that much clear in front plus space to stand. Put it in its final position before you load it; 57kg empty is not something you want to shift twice.

See it before you buy

It is worth seeing one built before you buy one in a box: you learn what the drawers feel like and whether a metre of height is right against your wall, and neither of those comes across in a photograph. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968, seven days a week, no appointment, and there is no rush on you. What is out on display changes all the time, so say the word when you arrive — if this chest is not built and out, it comes up from the store room, and if we are between deliveries it is a few days to have one in front of you. Living with it

Build it on a soft surface and go round the fixings twice — snug them all lightly first, then tighten in turn, which keeps the carcass square. A chest built out of square is where sticking drawers come from. After that, expect timber to behave like timber: it swells slightly in a damp autumn and shrinks back once the heating has been running, so drawers can be firmer in one season than another. That is normal. Dry cloth for dust, no solvent sprays, and email us after a month if anything is still not sitting right.

Allow roughly four weeks. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. The date is confirmed with you before you pay.

This chest requires assembly. It arrives in one box at 57kg gross, which is a two-person lift even in the carton, and it is put together in the room it is going to live in.

Does it come assembled?
No. This one requires assembly, and it is built in the room. That is what makes it manageable on an awkward staircase.

How many boxes, and how heavy?
One box, 57kg gross. Two people to carry it.

What is the difference between the four drawers?
Two depths. The shallow drawers are 71mm deep inside, the deeper ones 142mm, both over a floor of 898 × 376mm.

Will a folded jumper fit in the shallow drawer?
One layer, flat. For a stack, use one of the 142mm drawers.

Is an anti-topple kit included?
None is listed with this chest. At 1040mm tall it is worth asking about if it is going into a child’s room — email us before you order and we will confirm exactly what comes in the box.
