The Boho Retreat bedside chest is the brown piece in the range: mango, mindi and mahogany with MDF, 500mm wide, 400mm deep, 600mm high, with two drawers of different depths. Who it’s for

The brown finish is the one to choose when the room already has warm timber in it — a pine floor, an oak wardrobe, a headboard with grain showing — and a black piece would sit in the room like a hole. Practically it behaves like any 600mm bedside: right beside a divan with a deep mattress, tall beside a low frame. The 500 by 400mm top is one of the larger ones here and takes a lamp, a book and a glass together. The drawers divide the work between 69mm and 144mm of internal depth. It arrives to be built, which suits someone happy with a screwdriver and half an hour, and does not suit someone who wants it standing the minute it comes through the door. Two either side of a bed is the common order.

Measure first

The 500mm width is the figure that decides whether it fits beside the bed.

Allow roughly 330mm in front for the 306mm-deep drawer boxes to come fully out. Because it arrives flat in one box, the landing and the doorway are not the problem here — the floor space to build it on is. Clear about a metre and a half square of floor before you start, and check your mattress-top height against the 600mm before you order at all.

See it before you buy

Mixed timbers under a brown finish vary from board to board, and that variation is the character of the piece — which means a photograph of one is not a promise about another. Living with it

Go back to the fixings a fortnight after you build it and give each one a quarter turn; a newly assembled piece beds in and loosens slightly, and this is the single thing that keeps it solid for years. The timber itself moves a little with the heating season — a drawer that runs freely in autumn may fit more closely in the depth of winter and ease again by spring. That is the material, not a fault. Dust with a dry soft cloth, use a coaster on the top, and keep it off a radiator wall.

Assembly is required on this piece and it is a home build. One box, flat, with the drawers to be fitted — an ordinary screwdriver job for one person with a bit of floor to work on.

Does it come built?
No — this one needs assembling at home. It arrives in one box at 20kg.

What goes in each drawer?
The shallow drawer is 69mm deep inside and takes a book, a charger and glasses lying flat. The deep one is 144mm and takes what has to stand up. Both are 404 × 306mm in plan.

Is it the same piece as the black chest?
Same dimensions and the same drawer sizes, in a brown finish rather than black, and this one is recorded as needing assembly.

Will it suit a divan bed?
At 600mm it is one of the taller bedsides here, which is exactly what a divan with a deep mattress needs. Measure to the top of your mattress to be sure.

Can I get a vacuum under it?
We have no clearance measurement for this piece, so we will not quote one. Email us and we will measure one for you.
