The Boho Retreat bedside table is 460mm square and 665mm tall, in mango, mindi and mahogany with MDF, finished brown. There is no drawer and no shelf — a top, and legs under it. Who it’s for

Two things decide this piece: 665mm of height and no storage. The height makes it the one for a divan base with a deep mattress — the bed where every other bedside sits too low — and the wrong one beside a low frame. No storage means everything on it is on show, so it suits the person whose bedside is a lamp, a book and a glass, and not the person with three chargers and a stack of paperwork. The square 460mm top holds those three things comfortably. In brown it warms a room that already has timber in it rather than cutting against it, and being open underneath, a pair on either side of a high bed does not close a small room in.

Measure first

Only one measurement really matters, and it is not the width.

Measure floor to mattress top. Around 650 to 700mm and this table is level with where your hand naturally lands; much under 600mm and it will look and feel too tall. Nothing opens, so it needs no more floor than its own 460mm square. It arrives flat in one box, so the doorway and the landing are not a concern — clear a bit of floor to build it on instead.

See it before you buy

Height is hard to judge from a picture and easy to judge standing next to a bed, which is what a showroom is for. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Living with it

Tighten the fixings again a couple of weeks after you build it — a light piece on four legs shows a loose joint sooner than a heavy one does, and a quarter turn at the right moment is all it takes. On a hard floor it may rock a little until you find its spot or pack one leg. The timber will move slightly through the heating season, taking up and giving off moisture, and a joint that looks marginally different in midwinter will come back. Dust with a dry soft cloth, keep a coaster on the top since there is no drawer to take the wear, and keep it out of long direct sun.
