Two real drawers, at the height a bed frame wants.

This is the two-drawer bedside from the Camden range, in the natural colour: 400mm wide, 450mm deep, 550mm tall, made from MDF and rubber wood. The storage is two drawers and nothing else — no open shelf, no cupboard under. The Camden range runs through our Ballincollig showroom, and a bedside is best seen with the drawers empty, which is how we will put it in front of you. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

The number that decides a bedside is its height, and this one is 550mm. A bed frame with a mattress of ordinary depth puts the mattress top somewhere between 550 and 620mm off the floor, so this lands level with it or a little under — near enough to put a glass down in the dark without looking. Beside a divan with a deep mattress, where the top can sit at 650mm or more, you would be reaching down to it. The other number to take seriously is the 450mm depth. That is deeper than most bedside tables, and in a room where the bed already runs close to a wall, depth catches people out long before width does.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Four hundred and fifty deep is a lot for a bedside. Stick a strip of tape down on the carpet where it’s going and walk past it for a day before you decide.”

That depth is also what buys you the drawer — 380mm front to back inside.

What you’re getting

  • MDF and rubber wood, in the natural colour
  • Two drawers, one above the other
  • Each drawer 344 × 380 × 142mm inside
  • 176mm of clearance between the underside and the floor
  • External size 400 × 450 × 550mm
  • One box, around 18kg

Measure first

Measure the gap between the side of the mattress and whatever stands beside it, and measure at floor level — skirting boards and wardrobe plinths eat the bottom of that gap.

Dimension mm cm
Width 400 40
Depth 450 45
Height 550 55

Then allow for the drawer opening. A drawer 380mm deep inside needs roughly that much clear air in front of it to come out fully, so in a tight gap beside a radiator or a door architrave, that swing matters more than the footprint.

See it before you buy

A photograph will not tell you how far a drawer pulls before it starts to tip, or what it sounds like closing at one in the morning. Those are things you find out with a hand on the handle. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, nobody will hurry you. Only part of the range is out at any one time and we rearrange it constantly, so if this bedside is not among it, say which one you came for — the store room is directly behind us, and anything not to hand we can get in within a few days. Living with it

A new drawer is tighter than one that has been opened a thousand times. For the first few weeks it wants a firmer push at the end of its travel, then it settles and stops asking. Timber and board both react to the heating season: when the radiators go on in October the bedroom air dries out, and a drawer that ran easily in August can feel snug for a fortnight. That is normal and it passes. Keep the piece off the face of a radiator, wipe spills rather than letting a glass stand overnight, and lift it by the carcase, not by a drawer front, when it moves rooms.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge, and the date is agreed with you before you pay anything.

It arrives in one box of around 18kg. Our sheet for this piece does not state an assembly position, so rather than guess: email us and someone will check the piece itself before you order.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

Will a hardback lie flat in the drawer?
Yes. The inside is 344 × 380 × 142mm, so a large hardback lies flat with room above it for reading glasses and a charger.

Will a vacuum head go underneath?
There is 176mm of clearance. A standard upright or cordless head clears that; a deep carpet takes some of it back.

Is it tall enough for a divan bed?
Often not. Measure floor to mattress top — if that is much past 600mm, this will sit noticeably low.

How much do the two drawers hold between them?
Each is 142mm deep inside: books, chargers, a tablet, medication, the usual bedside clutter. Not deep enough for folded jumpers.

Do people buy one or two?
Most take a pair, one each side, which uses 800mm of wall. Where only one side is usable, one on its own reads perfectly well.
