One chest that takes a whole child’s wardrobe, folded.

The Camden 3 Drawer Chest in a natural finish is 870mm wide and 870mm high, built from MDF and rubber wood, and it belongs to our Camden range. It is 450mm deep, it weighs 47kg, and it is carried at the Ballincollig showroom, where you are welcome to empty a drawer out onto the carpet and see what it really holds. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

Three equal drawers, each 194mm deep inside, add up to a lot of folded clothes in a small footprint, which is why this ends up in a lot of children’s and teenagers’ rooms where there is no wardrobe or the wardrobe is already full. The natural finish takes the knocks of that sort of room better than a painted one. The height is the thing to think about honestly: at 870mm the top is above the eyeline of a small child, so it is a safe place to keep what you would rather they did not reach, and it is also the reason the wall fixing is not optional. In an adult room it works as a standing-height surface, not as a dressing table you sit at.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “The kit for the wall is in the box. Fit it the day it arrives. Three loaded drawers pulled out at once is a ladder, and a child will find that out before you do.”

It takes ten minutes and two screws into the wall behind.

What you’re getting

  • MDF and rubber wood in a natural finish.
  • Three drawers of equal depth.
  • 760 × 430 × 194mm inside each drawer.
  • Anti-topple kit included, to be fixed to the wall.
  • 172mm of clearance beneath the chest.
  • One box, 47kg gross.
  • Indoor use.

Measure first

Take the width to the wall you have in mind, and take the depth to the floor space in front of it.

Dimension mm cm
Width 870mm 87.0cm
Depth 450mm 45.0cm
Height 870mm 87.0cm

A child’s bedroom is usually the smallest room in the house, and that is where the 430mm of drawer travel bites. Open the tape out across the carpet and see whether a drawer can come fully out without hitting the bed or the door swing. If it cannot, the chest wants a different wall. The 450mm depth means it goes through a standard doorway without turning.

See it before you buy

Pull a drawer all the way out. That is the test that tells you what a chest is, and it is the one thing no photograph will do for you. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968 — seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you out of the building. The display is changed around constantly, so this chest may be in the store room rather than out when you arrive; ask at the desk and we will carry it up, or get it in for you within a few days. Living with it

New drawers are tight. They loosen with use over the first few weeks, and they run a little differently between a damp autumn and a heated January, because board and timber take up moisture and give it back with the season. That is normal. In a child’s room the useful habits are these: heaviest things in the bottom drawer, one drawer open at a time, and the wall fixing done before anything goes in. If a drawer is still dragging after a month of use, email us.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. We agree the date with you before you pay anything.

It comes in one box at 47kg gross — two people for the stairs. No assembly note is published for this chest, so email us before you order and we will check what has to be done in the room.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

Is it safe in a child’s room?
It comes with an anti-topple kit that fixes it to the wall, and that fixing should be done before the drawers are filled. Fitted properly, yes.

How many jumpers go in one drawer?
Each drawer is 760 × 430 × 194mm inside. That is eight to ten folded sweatshirts, in two rows.

Are the drawers different sizes?
No. All three are identical, 194mm deep inside.

How high is the top?
870mm from the floor. Standing height for an adult, above the reach of a small child.

What is under it?
172mm of clearance to the floor, which is enough to get a hoover head and an arm under to retrieve what rolls under there.

How is it different from the walnut one?
Only the colour. Same width, same height, same three drawers, same clearance.
