The Camden 3 Drawer Chest in walnut is the darkest piece in our Camden range, 870mm wide by 870mm high and 450mm deep, made from MDF and rubber wood. Who it’s for

A dark chest does something different in a room to a pale one: it reads as a solid block rather than disappearing into the wall, so it suits a room with light walls and something to anchor. That makes it a good guest room piece, or a chest for a landing wide enough to take 870mm of furniture, or the single storage piece in an adult’s room with no wardrobe to spare. Three drawers of the same size, 194mm deep inside, take bulk rather than sorting. Where it is less good is a small dark room — 870mm of dark colour in a north-facing box room will close the space in, and the white or natural version of the same chest will not.

Measure first

If it is going on a landing rather than in a bedroom, measure the passing space as well as the wall.

The chest takes 450mm out from the wall and an open drawer another 430mm on top of that, which is nearly 900mm of floor in use. On a landing that is the number that decides it: if two people cannot pass while a drawer is open, put it in the room instead. It goes through a standard doorway without turning.

See it before you buy

Walnut is a colour that changes with the light in a room, and no screen shows it honestly. Seen in daylight, next to the natural one, it is a decision you can make in a minute with your own eyes. Living with it

Two things to expect. The first is stiff drawers for a few weeks, which is what new runners do and what use cures. The second is dust: a dark finish shows it sooner than a pale one, so a dry cloth once a week keeps it looking like it did on the day it arrived. Board and timber move slightly with the heating season, so a drawer can feel firmer in midwinter and easier again in spring. That is the material, not a defect. Avoid solvent sprays, and email us if something is still not right after a month of ordinary use.

Questions people ask

Will it fit on a landing?
It is 870mm wide and 450mm deep against the wall. Add 430mm for an open drawer before you decide whether people can still get past.

What fits in a drawer?
760 × 430 × 194mm inside. A drawer of shirts stood on edge, or a stack of bath towels folded in three.

Is one drawer shallower for small items?
No. All three drawers are the same depth, 194mm inside.

Does the anti-topple kit come with it?
Yes, and it is meant to be screwed to the wall. That matters most in a house with children, but it is worth doing in any room.

Can I clean underneath?
There is 172mm between the underside and the floor.

Is walnut too dark for a small room?
It can be. In a north-facing box room the natural or white finish of the same chest will keep the room lighter.
