This is the bedside table from the Chic range, in the weathered colour, made from Mindy ash — a solid timber rather than a board with a picture on it. It is 470mm wide, 400mm deep and 695mm tall, with two drawers. It is the tall one in the Chic range, and the range is carried at the Ballincollig showroom. Who it’s for

Almost every bedside table sold is between 500 and 560mm tall, which is right for a bed frame and wrong for a divan. Put a 250 or 280mm mattress on a divan base and the top of your bed sits around 650 to 700mm off the floor — well above an ordinary bedside, so you spend every night reaching down and behind you for the lamp. At 695mm this one meets a bed like that on the level. The other side of it, plainly: beside a low platform bed it will loom. If your mattress top is at 500mm, this stands almost 200mm proud of it.

Measure first

The measurement that matters here is not the table. It is the distance from your bedroom floor to the top of your mattress. Take that, then compare it with 695.

Then look up. A tall bedside often lands under a window board, a sloping ceiling or a wall light, and 695mm plus a lamp is around 1.1 metres of occupied air. In an attic or dormer room, measure at the point where the table will stand, not in the middle of the room.

Height is what nobody can judge from a photograph — every bedside looks the right height beside a styled bed. Living with it

This is solid timber, and solid timber moves. Over a winter of heating it loses a little moisture and shrinks fractionally; over a damp spring it takes some back. You notice it as a drawer that runs freely one month and needs a firmer push the next, and occasionally as a fine line where two pieces of timber meet. None of that is damage — it is the material doing what it has always done. A new drawer is also tighter than an old one and eases within weeks. Keep it out of the direct blast of a radiator, and lift water off the top rather than letting a glass stand. The weathered colour varies across a solid piece because the grain takes the finish differently in different places.

Allow around four weeks. Delivery is across Cork and nationwide, or collect from the showroom at no charge, and we confirm the date with you before you pay.

It arrives in one box at around 16.5kg. Our sheet does not record an assembly position for this piece and we would rather not guess at one — email us and someone will check the actual table before you order.

Questions people ask

My mattress top is at 660mm. Is 695 too tall?
No. Thirty-five millimetres over is comfortable — you reach across rather than down. It is a gap of more than about 120mm that starts to feel wrong.

What fits in a drawer?
318 × 282 × 115mm inside: a hardback and a paperback flat, a charger, glasses, a small bottle lying down. Tall things go in the section below rather than in here.

Will the colour match the photograph?
Not exactly. A weathered colour on solid timber varies board to board, which is why it is worth looking at in daylight before you choose.

Would two work either side of a bed?
They would, and a pair is what most people take. At 470mm each, two use 940mm of wall, so check both sides.

Is it stable with a lamp on top?
At 16.5kg on a 470 × 400mm base, yes. Keep the weight low in the piece rather than piled on top.
