Two widths, one drawer, and an open shelf underneath.

The Colonna bedside comes in two sizes — 350mm and 450mm wide — and both stand 550mm tall and 400mm deep. It is made from mango wood with brass, and each has a single drawer over a fixed open shelf. Both sizes are available through the Ballincollig showroom, and side by side the choice makes itself. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

At 550mm tall this suits a bed frame rather than a tall divan: if your mattress top lands between 550 and 620mm, the table sits right. The real decision is width. The small one is 350mm across, narrow enough for a gap where nothing else has fitted — a chimney breast return, the space between a bed and a radiator — and it still gives you a drawer and a shelf. The large is 450mm, and the extra 100mm goes almost entirely into the drawer and the shelf. The shelf being open changes how the piece works: anything on it is visible, so it suits a folded book and a basket rather than the odds and ends you would rather not look at.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Measure the gap and take the bigger one if it fits. The extra hundred millimetres is nearly all shelf, and the shelf is the bit people end up using.”

The two sizes are otherwise identical.

What you’re getting

  • Mango wood with brass
  • One drawer over one fixed shelf, in either size
  • Small: drawer W290 × D87 × H310mm; shelf space W320 × D370 × H280mm
  • Large: drawer W380 × D87 × H310mm; shelf space W420 × D370 × H280mm
  • 370mm between shelf levels
  • 100mm of clearance to the floor
  • No assembly — it arrives ready to use, in one box
  • Around 14.4kg for the small, 16.2kg for the large

Read the drawer figures carefully: the shallowest of the three is 87mm, and that decides what stands upright inside. Books, a tablet, a charger and glasses go in flat. A tall bottle does not.

Measure first

Measure the clear gap beside the bed at floor level, then choose a width. Do not measure at mattress height — a frame is usually wider at the base than the mattress above it.

Dimension mm cm
Small — width × depth × height 350 × 400 × 550 35 × 40 × 55
Large — width × depth × height 450 × 400 × 550 45 × 40 × 55

The other thing to check is the floor. There is only 100mm underneath, so on a deep-pile carpet that gap closes further, and on an uneven floor the piece sits on the high spot rather than bridging it. A folded card under one corner is the usual fix.

See it before you buy

The difference between 350 and 450mm sounds trivial written down and is obvious the moment the two stand together, and a drawer 87mm deep has to be opened before it means anything. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and there is no hurry on you. What we have out changes from one week to the next, so if the Colonna is not among it when you arrive, say so at the door: one size or both will usually come up from the store room, and anything not behind us we will get in within a few days. Living with it

Mango is a solid timber and behaves like one. The colour is not uniform across a piece and will not be identical between two pieces — the grain takes the finish differently, and that is the material rather than a flaw. Through winter, with the heating on, the timber gives up moisture and the drawer can tighten; in a damp spring it eases again. Brass dulls slowly with handling into a softer tone; a dry cloth is all it needs. Keep it off the face of a radiator and lift standing water off the top.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge, with the date agreed before you pay.

There is no assembly. It arrives in one box, fully built — 14.4kg for the small size, 16.2kg for the large — so it comes out of the box, goes beside the bed and is finished. That makes the box bulkier than a flat pack, so put the back seats down if you are collecting.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

Which size should I take?
Whichever the gap allows: 500mm or more of clear floor, take the large; under about 450mm, take the small.

Will a vacuum head go underneath?
Probably not. There is 100mm of clearance, less than most upright heads need. A slim cordless head may go under; otherwise plan on pulling the piece out.

Does a hardback fit in the drawer?
Flat, yes, in either size. The drawer is 87mm at its shallowest, so nothing tall stands up in it.

What does the shelf hold?
280mm high and 370mm front to back — a stack of books, a small box, a folded throw.

Can I take one of each size?
You can, and where one side of the bed is tight that is often the sensible answer — height and depth are the same either way, so the tops still line up.
