One wide drawer on legs, with 375mm of air underneath.

The Craft bedside in the natural colour is the widest we carry: 500mm across, 400mm deep, 550mm tall. It is made from oak, oak-veneered MDF, plywood and pine, and holds a single wide drawer set high on legs. It comes through the Ballincollig showroom, and the thing to notice when you see it is how much of it is leg. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

This is the bedside for a small room that needs to feel less full. The drawer sits at the top and the legs carry it, so 375mm of the 550mm total is open floor you can see straight through — and a room where you can see the floor under the furniture reads bigger than one where you cannot. The wide top, 500 × 400mm, is genuinely useful: a lamp, a book and a glass all at once without stacking. The trade is that there is exactly one drawer and no shelf, so everything beside the bed either goes in that drawer or sits on top in plain view. If you want three drawers of things hidden away, this is the wrong piece.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Everything under that top is fresh air — 375 millimetres of it. Brilliant for getting the hoover under, no use to you at all if you were hoping to hide things.”

Two of these either side of a bed uses a metre of wall, so measure both sides before ordering a pair.

What you’re getting

  • Oak, oak-veneered MDF, plywood and pine, in the natural colour
  • One drawer, 426 × 300 × 100mm inside
  • Legs 375mm high, giving 375mm of clearance to the floor
  • 500mm wide, 400mm deep, 550mm tall
  • Assembly is legs only — the carcase arrives made up
  • One box, around 15kg

Measure first

500mm is wide for a bedside. Measure the clear gap beside the bed before anything else, and remember the frame is usually wider at floor level than the mattress above it.

Dimension mm cm
Width 500 50
Depth 400 40
Height 550 55

Then check what is beside it. A drawer 300mm deep inside needs about 300mm of clear air in front to come fully out, and because this drawer is wide the handle sits close to the edge of the bed — in a tight gap you will be opening it at an angle every night. Legs help at the wall: the carcase stands out over a skirting board that would hold a solid-sided piece away from it.

See it before you buy

A drawer this wide and this shallow either runs sweetly or it racks and jams, and no picture will tell you which — 426mm across is something you learn with your own hand, pulling it all the way out. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you. What we have out on display changes constantly, so if this one is not among it, ask: it is a short trip to the store room, and anything not behind the floor we can get in within a few days. Living with it

Expect a new drawer to be firmer than an old one for the first few weeks — a wide drawer especially, because it wants a straight push rather than a tug on one corner. Pull it from the middle and it runs true; pull it from one end and any drawer this wide will bind. Timber and veneer both react to the heating season, so a drawer that was easy in September can feel snug in December and free up by March. That is normal. The other thing about legs: check the fixings after a fortnight and again after a few months, and nip up anything loose. It is the difference between a table that stays solid and one that develops a rock.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks. Delivered across Cork and nationwide, or collected from the showroom at no charge, with the date confirmed with you before you pay.

Assembly is the legs only. The carcase and drawer come made up in one box of around 15kg: turn it upside down on a rug, fit the legs with the fittings supplied, stand it up. Under ten minutes.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

Will a vacuum go under it?
Yes, easily. 375mm of clearance takes any upright head, a cordless, and most robot vacuums.

What fits in the drawer?
426mm across, 300mm front to back, 100mm deep. A hardback and a tablet lie flat side by side. Nothing tall stands up in 100mm — a bottle has to lie down.

Is there storage under the drawer?
No — under the drawer is open floor. You gain light and easy cleaning; you lose a second drawer.

Is 500mm too wide for a small bedroom?
It can be. If you have less than about 550mm of clear floor beside the bed, look at a narrower piece.

Will it wobble on an uneven floor?
Any four-legged piece can. Check the fixings are tight; if it still rocks, a slip of card under one leg settles it.
