A low oak-framed bed — 870mm to the top of the headboard.

The Craft bed in natural is the low frame in the Craft range, made from oak, oak-veneered MDF, plywood and pine, in 4′6″ double and 5′ king. Almost every other bed in the bedroom range stands 1100mm or more at the headboard; this one stops at 870mm. The difference is bigger in a room than it looks in a number, which is the argument for seeing it in Ballincollig. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

The low headboard is the whole argument for this bed. At 870mm it sits below most window sills, so it goes along a wall with a window in it without blocking light, and it works in an attic room where a 1.2m headboard would not. The double occupies 1460 × 2000mm and the king 1610 × 2100mm. Where it does not suit is the person who sits up in bed to read at night — 870mm is a low back to lean against once a mattress is on the frame, and pillows only partly fix that.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Eight seventy to the top of it. That’s a bed you put under a window without losing the light — that’s the whole point of this one.”

What you’re getting

  • Bed frame in 4′6″ double or 5′ king, natural colour. No mattress included.
  • Materials: oak, oak-veneered MDF, plywood and pine.
  • Headboard 870mm from the floor — the full height of the bed.
  • Footboard 380mm.
  • Legs 180mm, clearance to floor 180mm.
  • Usable under-bed height 150mm beneath the side rail.
  • Full assembly required. Two boxes per bed.
  • Gross weight 53.5kg for the double, 59kg for the king.

Measure first

Depth is the length of the bed. The height given is to the top of the headboard, which on this frame is the tallest part of it.

Dimension mm cm
4′6″ double — width × depth × height 1460 × 2000 × 870 146 × 200 × 87
5′ king — width × depth × height 1610 × 2100 × 870 161 × 210 × 87

The double takes a 135 × 190cm mattress and the king a 150 × 200cm. One number here is easy to misread: the legs are 180mm tall but the usable height under the bed is 150mm, because the side rail hangs lower than the top of the leg. Measure your boxes against 150mm, not 180mm.

See it before you buy

A low bed is judged by sitting on it, not looking at it — how far you drop, whether you get up off it easily, how 870mm reads against a window wall. That is a five-minute job in person and guesswork anywhere else. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you. A bed takes up room, so what we have made up changes constantly and this one is not always among it. Tell us you are coming, at info@mulberryhouse.ie, and we will bring it up from the store room or have it in within a few days, so you can sit on it before you decide. Get directions

Living with it

Oak and pine move. Through the first heating season the timber gives up a little moisture, joints take up, and a frame that was silent in September can pick up a small creak by November. It is normal, and the fix is a spanner rather than a return: go round every bolt about three weeks after the bed goes into use, and again once the heating has been running. Check the slats are seated fully in their housings while you are there — a slat that has crept sideways is the commonest cause of a noise people blame on the frame.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

The Craft bed takes around four weeks. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. The delivery date is agreed with you before you pay.

It needs full assembly and arrives in two boxes — 53.5kg for the double, 59kg for the king. Build it in the bedroom rather than downstairs.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

How high is the headboard, really?
870mm from the floor. That is the full height of the bed, and it is low enough to pass under most window sills.

What actually fits underneath?
Anything under 150mm tall. The legs are 180mm but the side rail is the limiting measurement.

Which mattress size do I need?
135 × 190cm for the 4′6″ double, 150 × 200cm for the 5′ king. The frame comes without one — see /collections/mattresses if you need a mattress as well.

Is the footboard high?
380mm — a defined foot to the bed rather than a lip, and unusually tall next to an 870mm headboard.
