The Craft Open Wardrobe is the open-fronted piece in the Craft collection: 800mm wide, 500mm deep and 1750mm tall, in oak and oak-veneered MDF with a natural finish. It stands on 152mm legs. It comes through the Ballincollig showroom, which is where pale oak looks like itself rather than like a photograph of itself. Who it’s for

Pale oak and an open front is the lightest a wardrobe of this size can look. In a small room a closed 800mm wardrobe reads as a solid block; this one lets the eye through it and lifts off the floor on 152mm legs, so the room keeps its corners. That makes it a good answer for a box room, a dressing corner, or a spot where a swinging door has nowhere to go. It holds one person’s clothes, not two. And it asks something of you: with no doors, whatever is on the shelves is what the room looks like, and dust settles on the contents rather than on a door front. If your clothes live folded and put away, it is a pleasure. If they do not, buy doors.

Measure first

Height and wall are the two things to check before you order. It stands 1750mm assembled and it is meant to be fixed to the wall behind.

Measure the ceiling, the landing and the turn at the top of the stairs. Then look at the wall it will stand against: the anti-topple kit needs something solid to go into, so if it is plasterboard you want a fixing suited to that, or a stud found first. With no doors there is no swing arc, but leave floor space for building it flat and tilting it upright.

See it before you buy

Oak veneer and solid oak sit side by side in this piece and a screen flattens the difference between them. In daylight you can see how the grain runs, and how open shelving actually looks once there are clothes on it. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Living with it

Pale oak does not stay exactly as pale as the day it arrives. Over the first year it warms slightly under daylight, evenly if the light reaches all of it and unevenly if one end sits in permanent shade or one shelf is covered by the same folded pile for months. The solid oak parts give a little with the heating season, so a joint may tick in a dry winter and settle again after. With open shelves, dust is the everyday reality: the 310mm gap is wide enough to run a cloth along without unpacking the whole thing. Wipe dry, and keep standing water off the veneer.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks. Delivery across Cork and nationwide, or collection from the showroom at no charge. The date is agreed with you before you pay.

Full assembly is required and it comes in one box at 30kg gross. Fit the anti-topple kit as part of the build rather than promising yourself you will do it at the weekend.

How far apart are the shelves?
310mm, which takes folded jumpers and jeans comfortably and tall boxes not at all.

How many shelves are there, and is there a rail?
Our data gives the spacing but not the count or a rail height, and we will not guess. Email us and we will measure one and send you the figures.

Can I clean under it?
Yes. 152mm of clearance to the floor.

Does it have to be fixed to the wall?
Yes. The anti-topple kit is supplied and should be fitted, especially in a child’s room.

Will it feel bulky in a small bedroom?
Less than a closed wardrobe of the same footprint. The open front and the raised legs are what keep it looking light.
