The Hatfield Open Wardrobe in natural is 800mm wide, 480mm deep and 1700mm tall, built from oak, oak veneer, rubber wood and MDF, on oak-veneered legs. Who it’s for

The hanging drop is 1214mm. Shirts, jackets, trousers over a bar and dresses to the knee hang clear; an ankle-length coat or a long dress will touch the bottom. Worth knowing before, not after. At 800mm wide it is one person’s clothes — a single room, a guest room, or a dressing corner. The 480mm depth is the shallowest wardrobe on this page, and that is deliberate: it gives up very little floor in a narrow room. A standard hanger is around 440mm across, so it fits, but only just, and a broad-shouldered winter coat will sit slightly proud of the front line. Being open-fronted it needs no swing clearance at all, and it needs an owner who hangs things back up.

Measure first

Two measurements to take with you: the height of the room, and the width of the hanger you actually use.

Assembled it stands 1700mm — check the ceiling, and check the landing and the turn at the top of the stairs, which is where tall pieces get stuck. At 480mm deep it slides into a narrower space than most wardrobes, and with no doors there is no arc to keep clear in front of it. Do leave enough floor to assemble it flat and stand it up.

Living with it

A new drawer is stiffer than one that has been pulled out a thousand times. Give it a few weeks of ordinary use before you judge it, and if it drags at first, take a little weight out of it rather than forcing it. Rubber wood and oak both move a fraction with the heating season, so a joint may tick in a dry winter and quieten again by spring. Because the shelf is fixed, decide what goes where at assembly — you will not be moving it later. And with an open front, dust reaches the clothes as well as the frame, so the shoulders of anything hanging there want a shake every so often. All of this is normal.

It needs full assembly and arrives in one box at 29.5kg gross. The anti-topple kit is in the box and belongs on the wall.
