Smoked oak, open at the front, shelf fixed in place.
This is the Hatfield Open Wardrobe in a smoked, dark wood finish — 800mm wide, 480mm deep, 1700mm tall, in oak, oak veneer, rubber wood and MDF, on oak-veneered legs. There are no doors: a hanging rail, one fixed shelf, and an internal compartment. It comes through the Ballincollig showroom, which is the only place to see how dark the smoked finish really is. Who it’s for
A dark open frame behaves differently in a room to a pale one. It does not disappear — it anchors the wall it stands on, and clothes read against it with more contrast, which is either the effect you want or the one you do not. It is a good choice in a room that already has a pale floor or pale walls and nothing to hold it together. Practically, the smoked finish hides dust for longer than a natural one, which counts for something on a piece with no doors. It is 800mm wide, so one person’s clothes: a single room, a spare room, a dressing corner. And it is 480mm deep, which is shallow — it takes very little floor, but a broad winter coat on a standard hanger will sit close to the front edge.
Chosen by Paul
Paul says: “Dark timber and open shelving get along. You will see less dust on this than on a pale one — which is not the same as there being less dust on it.”
What you’re getting
- Open-fronted, no doors, in a smoked dark wood finish.
- Solid oak and oak veneer over MDF, with rubber wood in the frame; the legs are oak veneer.
- Hanging rail with one shelf, fixed rather than adjustable.
- 1214mm between shelves, which is the clear hanging drop.
- Internal compartment measuring 719mm across, 480mm front to back and 182mm high.
- 150mm of clearance to the floor.
- Anti-topple kit included and intended to be fitted to the wall.
- Full assembly required. One box, 29.5kg gross.
Measure first
The internal drop of 1214mm is what decides whether your clothes suit it. The external height is what decides whether it gets into the room.
| Dimension | mm | cm |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 800 | 80 |
| Depth | 480 | 48 |
| Height | 1700 | 170 |
At 1700mm assembled, check the ceiling where it will stand — and if it is going under a slope, measure the low side. Then measure the landing and the turn at the top of the stairs. The shallow 480mm depth helps on a tight landing, and the open front means nothing swings, so it can sit closer to a bed than a door wardrobe of the same width.
See it before you buy
Dark finishes are the ones screens get most wrong. Smoked oak reads brown, grey or nearly black depending on the light, and the grain shows through in a way no photograph carries. Daylight is the only honest test of it. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), seven days a week, no appointment needed, nobody will hurry you. We rotate what is out, so this one may be up or may be in the store room behind the display: ask for it by name and we will bring it to you, and if it is not with us that week, a few days will have one in. Living with it
The thing to know about a dark finish is how it takes a knock: because the colour sits in the surface, a scratch or a scuff shows up as a lighter mark rather than a darker one, and it is more visible than it would be on pale oak. A wax made for finished timber will usually soften it, and if you are unsure what to use, email us before you put anything on it. Beyond that, rubber wood and oak both move a little with the heating season, so a tick from a joint in a dry winter is normal. The shelf is fixed, so decide the layout at assembly. Dust dry rather than damp.
Delivery, assembly & aftercare
Allow around four weeks from the day you order. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge, and your date is confirmed with you before any payment is taken.
Full assembly is required and it arrives in a single box at 29.5kg gross. Fit the anti-topple kit to the wall as part of the build — a tall open frame with weight along one rail is exactly the piece that wants it.
Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.
Questions people ask
How much hanging length is there?
1214mm between shelves, so a full-length coat or a long dress will touch the bottom.
What size is the internal compartment?
719mm across, 480mm front to back and 182mm high.
Can I move the shelf up or down?
No. It is fixed in position.
Does the dark finish hide marks?
It hides dust well and scratches poorly — a knock shows as a pale mark. Worth knowing in a busy room.
Is a wall fixing included?
Yes, the anti-topple kit is supplied and should be fitted.
