The Hyland bedside is a single-drawer table, 400mm square and 500mm tall, built from MDF and oak-veneered MDF with iron, finished in black and natural. It does not belong to one of our named ranges — it stands on its own. It comes through the Ballincollig showroom, and the first thing people notice when they lift it is the weight. Who it’s for

Two numbers make the case. It is 500mm tall, which is low, and it weighs 10kg, which is almost nothing for furniture. The height suits a low frame — a platform or slatted frame where the mattress top sits around 450 to 550mm — and it will feel wrong beside a divan with a deep mattress standing a good 150mm above it. The weight matters differently. If you rearrange a bedroom often, or everything you own has to be carried up a stairs by one person, a 10kg bedside on legs is an easier object to live with than a solid one at twice that. It has one drawer and nothing else, so it holds what belongs beside a bed and no more.

Measure first

Start with the height of your own bed. Measure floor to mattress top and compare it with 500mm — a difference of more than about 100mm is where a bedside stops being convenient.

The practical warning here is about weight rather than size. A light table on legs will slide on a hard floor if you lean on it or drag the drawer open at an angle, and it will scuff a varnished board over time. Felt pads under the legs solve both on day one. On carpet it is a non-issue.

Weight, balance and the way a drawer runs are what a photograph cannot carry — 10kg feels either neat or insubstantial in the hand, and you will know which within a second of picking it up. Living with it

A new drawer is tight and loosens with use; a few weeks of ordinary opening does it. Board and veneer take up and give off moisture as the heating changes, so a drawer can run differently in January than it did in August — leave it and it settles. The thing to watch on a legged piece this light is the leg fixings. Check them after a couple of weeks and again after a few months, because a small slackness at the leg shows up as a rock at the top. Wipe the top dry rather than leaving water on it, and keep it away from the direct heat of a radiator.

Allow around four weeks. Delivery across Cork and nationwide, or collection from the showroom at no charge. We agree the date with you before you pay.

One box, around 10kg — the lightest bedside we carry and a one-hand job on a stairs. The only assembly is fixing the legs on: turn the carcase over on a bed or rug, fit the legs with the fittings supplied, stand it up. Ten minutes.

Questions people ask

How deep is the drawer really?
90mm. That is shallow. A book, a tablet, a charger, glasses and medication all lie flat in a 360 × 360mm space, but nothing tall stands upright in it.

Will a robot vacuum fit under it?
There is 370mm of clearance — more than any robot vacuum needs, and any upright head goes under as well.

Is 10kg too light to be stable?
It is stable in normal use on a level floor. Do not sit on the top, and on bare boards put felt pads under the legs so it stays where you put it.

Is it tall enough for a divan?
At 500mm, generally no. If your mattress top is much above 600mm, this is not the piece for you.

Should I take two?
Most people do, one either side, and at 400mm each a pair uses 800mm of wall. On its own it is small enough not to look lopsided.
