Hyland 2 Door Wardrobe

The Hyland is a two-door wardrobe in black and natural, built from MDF, MDF melamine and oak-veneered MDF with iron fittings, standing on 150mm legs. It measures 850mm wide, 520mm deep and 1,780mm high once it is built. It belongs to the range at our Ballincollig showroom, where the floor is rearranged constantly. Who it’s for

Inside, the cupboard is 810mm wide. That is one person’s hanging clothes — a spare room, a box room, a teenager’s room, or a second wardrobe for whichever half of a couple has run out of rail. It is not a main wardrobe for two adults, and we would rather say so now. The 500mm internal depth is the useful part: a standard hanger is around 430 to 450mm across, so shoulders sit square rather than pressing on the door. At 1,780mm it is also the shortest wardrobe here, which matters under a low ceiling.

Measure first

These are the assembled external dimensions.

It arrives flat in one box and is built in the room, so the carcass never has to go round the turn at the top of the stairs — but one 75.5kg box does, so measure the landing and the doorway. Once it is built you have to stand it up, and tilting a 1,780mm carcass upright needs about 1,855mm of clear height. Sloped ceilings and low bulkheads are where this goes wrong.

See it before you buy

A photograph will not tell you how firmly a door pulls shut, or how much room is really under that shelf — ten seconds with a hand on the door settles both, and no image ever will. Living with it

New doors sit tighter than doors that have been opened a thousand times, and almost no bedroom floor is truly level. Give it a fortnight, then look along the gap between the two doors — if it runs wider at the top than the bottom, the hinges adjust with a screwdriver in about a minute. That is normal, not a fault. Wipe the veneer with a barely damp cloth and dry it after; do not let water stand on the edges.

Questions people ask

Will a full-length winter coat hang without folding?
The cupboard is 1,594mm high inside and the shelf takes 310mm off the top, so the rail leaves roughly 1,270mm of drop. A knee-length or three-quarter coat hangs clear. A floor-length coat or a long dress will sit on the base.

Is it wide enough for two people?
No. 810mm of internal width is one person’s clothes.

What is the shelf actually good for?
There is 310mm between it and the top of the cupboard. Folded jumpers, bed linen, a spare pillow. Not a hard suitcase.

Does it have to be fixed to the wall?
Yes. The anti-topple kit is included and it is there to be used. Fit it as you build.

Can I clean under it?
Yes. The legs give 150mm of clearance to the floor.
