Three full-width drawers on a frame just 400mm deep.
The Hyland 3 Drawer Chest is a black and natural piece built from oak-veneered MDF, melamine, iron and rubber. It does not belong to one of our named ranges — it stands on its own — and it comes through our Ballincollig showroom, where the thing to notice is how little room it takes up. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.
Who it’s for
At 400mm deep this is the narrowest chest we carry, and that is the point of it. It suits a box room, a landing, the wall behind a door, or the awkward strip beside a bed where a normal chest would stick out too far. It is 900mm wide and 750mm tall, so the top is a real working surface at hip height. What it is not is a chest for a lot of clothes: three drawers is three drawers, and at 158mm inside they hold the everyday layer rather than a whole wardrobe. Two adults dividing one chest should look elsewhere.
Chosen by Paul
Paul says: “Eight hundred and sixty-eight millimetres across, inside. That’s a drawer you can lay a shirt in flat, without folding the sleeves under themselves.”
Almost the full width of the chest turns into usable drawer, which is rarer than it sounds.
What you’re getting
- Oak-veneered MDF, melamine, iron and rubber, in black with natural
- Three drawers, all the same internal size: 868 × 360 × 158mm
- 868mm of internal width against a 900mm carcass — very little is lost to the frame
- 158mm inside is about five folded T-shirts stacked, or three jumpers laid flat
- Legs 150mm high, giving 150mm of clearance to the floor
- An anti-topple kit is included and fixes to the wall — worth fitting on any chest, and essential in a house with children, since three wide drawers pull out a long way
- Assembly is legs and feet only
- Arrives in one box, 40kg gross — the lightest chest here, though stairs are still a two-person job
Measure first
The depth is what makes this chest useful, and also what you plan around.
| Dimension | mm | cm |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 900 | 90 |
| Depth | 400 | 40 |
| Height | 750 | 75 |
A 400mm carcass takes almost nothing off the room, but the drawer inside runs 360mm front to back, so an open drawer nearly doubles the footprint. Allow around 450mm clear in front of the face — enough for the drawer and a hand on the front of it. That matters most on a landing or in a corridor, where the chest fits neatly against the wall and then blocks the way the moment you open it.
See it before you buy
Black furniture photographs flatly and this one has more than one material in it, so the way the natural fronts sit against the dark frame is best judged with your own eyes — and nothing on a screen shows you how far a drawer actually runs. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, nobody will hurry you. What is out changes from one week to the next here: email info@mulberryhouse.ie before you travel and we will lift this chest up from the store room, or get one in within a few days, so it is ready when you arrive. Living with it
A wide drawer in a shallow chest is the one that teaches patience in the first month. Loaded and pulled from one corner it can run unevenly until the runners have bedded in; pull it from the middle of the front and it settles within a few weeks. The dark finish shows dust and fingerprints more readily than a light one, and a dry cloth is all it wants — anything wet is a mistake on a veneered surface. Keep it off a radiator wall, and fit the anti-topple kit before you load the drawers rather than after.
Delivery, assembly & aftercare
Allow around four weeks.
Delivered across Cork and nationwide, or collected from the showroom at no charge, with the date confirmed before you pay.
It arrives as one box, 40kg gross. Assembly is legs and feet only, and the anti-topple kit is in the box with it.
Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.
Questions people ask
How wide is the drawer inside?
868mm, against a chest 900mm wide. Front to back it is 360mm, and 158mm deep.
Will it fit on a landing?
It is only 400mm deep, so usually yes — but allow another 450mm in front for the drawer, or you will be squeezing past it every morning.
Does it come with a wall fixing?
Yes, an anti-topple kit is included and fixes to the wall. Fit it, particularly with children in the house.
Are the three drawers different sizes?
No, all three are 868 × 360 × 158mm inside.
What is under it?
150mm of clearance on the legs, so a hoover head goes straight under.
