The Loughton bedstead in black is a mild steel frame with wooden slats, finished in black, and it is made in one size: 5′ king. There is no single and no double in this colour, so it is a main-bedroom decision rather than a range you build a house around. It comes through the Ballincollig showroom, and black steel is a finish worth seeing under real light rather than on a screen. Who it’s for

Anyone furnishing one main bedroom and wanting a frame with presence but very little bulk. The bed takes up 1575 × 2090mm of floor and stands 1120mm high, and the steel sections take up almost no visual room — in a small king-sized bedroom a metal bedstead reads far lighter than a solid timber headboard of the same height. It is also a strong choice where storage has to go under the bed, with 275mm of clear height beneath the frame. Where it does not suit: a house kitting out several rooms at once, since this colour comes in king only, and a room where the wall behind the bed is already dark, because a black frame against a dark wall loses its shape.

Measure first

One size, so one row. Depth is the length of the bed and the height is to the top of the headboard.

It takes a 150 × 200cm king mattress and is sold without one. At 1575mm wide, a 3.2m bedroom leaves roughly 810mm each side and a 3m bedroom about 710mm — comfortable either way, which is part of why a king works in rooms people assume are too small for one. Allow for your skirting board if the bed goes against a wall: the headboard is a flat steel frame and sits proud of a deep skirting rather than tight to the plaster.

See it before you buy

Black finishes read differently in every room — flat and graphic in daylight, almost invisible under a warm bulb at night. Living with it

The slats are the part to watch on a metal bedstead. They are timber sitting in steel brackets, and over the first weeks of use they seat themselves into position — during which a slat can creep along the rail and knock, which sounds far more serious than it is. Lift the mattress at about three weeks, push each slat back square, and go round the frame bolts with the key at the same time. Metal joints settle just as timber ones do. Do that once and the bed will generally stay quiet.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks from ordering to delivery. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge, and the date is confirmed with you before you pay.

Full assembly is required and it arrives in two boxes at 33kg gross — light enough that getting it up a stairs is not the problem it is with a timber king frame.

Does it come in any other size?
In black, no — 5′ king only. The ivory version of this bedstead is also made in a 3′ single.

What fits underneath?
275mm of usable height on 265mm legs, so deep boxes go under without lifting the frame.

How high is the footboard?
