An ivory steel bedstead, in single and king.

The Loughton bedstead is a metal frame — mild steel with wooden slats — finished in ivory, made in a 3′ single and a 5′ king. It is the lightest bed in our bedroom range and it has the most room underneath it. Both sizes come through the Ballincollig showroom, which is where you find out whether a metal bedstead is the look you actually want. Who it’s for

Two very different rooms. The 3′ single is 980 × 1990mm and weighs 25kg — a child’s room, a small spare room, a room over the stairs where a heavy timber frame is a struggle to get in and out. The 5′ king is 1575 × 2090mm and 33kg, unusually light for a king. Both stand 1120mm high with a 660mm footboard, and that footboard is the honest limitation: it is by far the highest here, and a sleeper over about six foot will feel it.

The single takes a 90 × 190cm mattress and the king a 150 × 200cm. Under the bed is where this frame earns its place: 275mm of usable height, so full-depth boxes and a suitcase go underneath without a squeeze. One thing to check in a smaller room — the 660mm footboard is tall enough to meet a radiator or a window sill if the bed goes end-on to a wall.

Metal beds divide people, and a screen will not settle it. Living with it

A steel bedstead behaves differently from a timber one. There is no timber frame to move with the heating, but metal-to-metal joints settle, and a bolt that has taken a few weeks of getting in and out of bed will often want a turn to stay silent. If a new bedstead starts to talk to you around the month mark, that is normal and it is a five-minute job: tighten every bolt, then check the wooden slats are sitting properly in their brackets, since a slat that has shifted along the rail knocks against the steel and sounds exactly like a broken joint.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks. Delivered across Cork and nationwide, or collected from the showroom at no charge, with your date confirmed before you pay.

Full assembly is required and each bed comes in two boxes. At 25kg for the single and 33kg for the king this is the easiest bed here to carry upstairs and, if you move house, the easiest to take apart and bring with you.

It is a frame sold on its own — the mattress is separate, and ours are at /collections/mattresses.

Questions people ask

How much room is there underneath?
275mm of usable height, on 265mm legs. Deep boxes and a suitcase go under this one comfortably.

What mattress sizes does it take?
90 × 190cm for the 3′ single and 150 × 200cm for the 5′ king.

Is the footboard a problem for a tall sleeper?
It might be. At 660mm it is the highest footboard we have, so if you are over six foot ask us to put one up and lie on it before you order.

Is it the same bed as the black Loughton?
Same frame and measurements, but the black is made in 5′ king only. This ivory one is the one to look at if you need a single.
