Six hundred millimetres tall, which is where most beds want it.

The Malvern 2 Drawer Bedside is a small two-drawer table from the Malvern collection, made in oak, rubberwood, oak veneer and MDF in a natural colour, standing on legs 180mm high. It measures 450mm wide, 400mm deep and 600mm to the top. It comes through the Ballincollig showroom, where you can open the drawers yourself before you decide. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.

Who it’s for

Height is what decides a bedside, and this one is 600mm. That sits the top roughly level with the mattress on a divan or a taller upholstered bed, which is the height you want when you are reaching for a glass of water in the dark. On a low platform bed with a mattress top nearer 500mm it will stand proud, and you will see it every time you walk in. At 450mm wide it is a narrow piece, so it fits the gap between a bed and a wall, or an alcove, without taking over. The two drawers are 120mm deep inside — a book, reading glasses, a charger, tablets, a notepad. Folded jumpers are not what they are for. Most people take a pair, one each side of the bed.

Chosen by Paul

Paul says: “Those legs leave you 180mm of daylight underneath. The vacuum head goes under it instead of round it, and after a year of that you’ll know why I mention it.”

The carcase arrives built. The legs are the only part you fit.

  • Legs 180mm high, giving 180mm clear to the floor
  • Overall 450mm wide × 400mm deep × 600mm high
  • Assembly is legs and feet only
  • One box, 21kg
  • For indoor use

Measure first

Two numbers matter here: the gap beside your bed and the height of your mattress top.

Dimension mm cm
Width 450 45
Depth 400 40
Height 600 60

Allow more than the 400mm depth in front of it. A drawer 344mm from front to back needs roughly that much clear air again to come all the way out, so if the bed sits tight to it you will be opening the drawer halfway for the rest of its life. And measure from the floor to the top of your made-up mattress. If that figure is between about 550 and 650mm, this is the right height. If it is well under 500mm, look at something lower.

See it before you buy

A photograph will not tell you how a drawer runs or how it sounds closing. Come to the showroom at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968) and put your hand on one. We are open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you. The floor changes week to week, and a bedside is a small thing to have up among the beds, so email info@mulberryhouse.ie before you travel: we will have it up from the store room, or ordered in within a few days, waiting for you. Living with it

New furniture behaves like new furniture. The drawers will be tighter for the first few weeks than they will be in a year, because nothing has worn in yet — open them fully rather than half, and they settle. Timber and veneer move a little when the heating goes on in October and again when it goes off in spring, so a drawer that slid sweetly in August can feel snug in November. That is normal and it passes. Check the leg fixings after a fortnight and again after a few months; a piece this light gets nudged around when the room is hoovered, and a bolt half a turn loose is the usual cause of a wobble.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks from the day you place it.

We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. Either way the date is agreed with you before you pay anything.

It arrives in one box weighing 21kg, and the only assembly is fitting the legs and feet.

Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.

Questions people ask

Will an A5 hardback lie flat in the drawer?
Yes. The inside measures 302 × 344mm, so a hardback lies flat with room beside it. At 120mm deep you could stack several.

Can I get the vacuum underneath?
There is 180mm of clearance to the floor, which takes most upright and cylinder heads without you moving the table.

Is it tall enough for a divan bed?
At 600mm it suits a mattress top of roughly 550 to 650mm, which covers most divans. Measure yours before ordering.

How much building is involved?
Legs and feet only. The body of the table comes assembled.

Would it work as a small hall or sofa-side table?
It would. It takes up 450 × 400mm of floor and stands 600mm high, and it is made for indoor use.
