The low one, and two drawers of different depths.
The Okayama 2 Drawer Bedside comes from the Okayama collection and is built from oak, steel and MDF in an oak colour. It is 450mm wide, 400mm deep and 550mm high, with 160mm of clear space under it. Ask for it in the Ballincollig showroom and you can slide both drawers out and see the difference between them. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.
Who it’s for
At 550mm this is the lowest bedside of the four we carry, and that is the reason to choose it. Modern low bed frames — the ones where the mattress top sits somewhere around 500 to 600mm — leave a tall bedside looking like a lectern. This one lands level. Next to a deep divan with a 700mm mattress top it will feel sunken, and no amount of liking the oak will fix that, so measure before you commit. It is a narrow 450mm across, which suits a bedroom where the bed nearly fills the wall. The two drawers are not the same: one is 90mm deep inside and one is 140mm, so the shallow one takes the things you want to find without rummaging and the deeper one takes the rest. Buy them in twos if the bed has two sides.
Chosen by Paul
Paul says: “Put the small stuff in the 90mm drawer and the clutter in the 140mm one. Two drawers the same depth and everything ends up in the bottom of both.”
Both drawers are 380 × 300mm inside; only the depth changes.

Measure first
Take the height of your mattress top first, then the width of the gap beside the bed.
| Dimension | mm | cm |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 450 | 45 |
| Depth | 400 | 40 |
| Height | 550 | 55 |
550mm is a deliberate choice, not a saving. It reads well beside a low frame and badly beside a high one. The other measurement people forget is the swing of the bedroom door: at 450 × 400mm this table is small, but a door opening back against a wall will still catch a handle if the two share the same corner. And leave around 400mm in front for the drawers to come out fully — a 300mm drawer that only opens 150mm is a drawer you stop using.
See it before you buy
You cannot judge a drawer from a photograph, and you certainly cannot judge 100mm of height difference — that only makes sense with the table standing beside you. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968). Seven days a week, no appointment, and nobody will rush you out the door. Living with it
Give it a few weeks. A new drawer is stiffer than one that has been opened a thousand times, and the first month is the month you notice it — pull each drawer right out to its stop rather than easing it half open, and it loosens off. Oak moves with the seasons, a little more when a bedroom radiator is directly beside the piece, so expect a drawer to feel snugger in the first cold snap and easier again by March. Nothing is wrong. This one is light at 17.5kg, so it slides when you knock it; feel underneath every so often and nip up the leg fixings, because that is where a rattle comes from. Dust it dry and keep mugs on a mat — a ring on an oak-coloured top is a job to shift.

Questions people ask
Which drawer is the deep one?
One is 90mm deep inside and one is 140mm. Ask to see it and we will get one out for you, or email us and we will check it and come back to you.
Will a paperback and a charger fit the shallow drawer?
Comfortably. The shallow drawer is 380 × 300mm and 90mm deep inside.
Is 550mm too low for my bed?
If your mattress top is above about 650mm, yes — you would be reaching down for everything. Measure floor to mattress top and compare.
Can I clean underneath it?
There is 160mm to the floor, enough for a vacuum head to pass under without lifting the table.
What do I have to build?
Legs and feet. The rest arrives put together.
