The Okayama 6 Drawer Chest is built from oak, steel and MDF in an oak colour, 1310mm wide and 720mm tall, on legs that leave 160mm of clear floor beneath it. It is part of the Okayama collection, and the difference between the two drawer depths is obvious in about five seconds once you have one open in the Ballincollig showroom. Who it’s for

This is the wide, everyday chest for a couple sharing one piece of furniture. Two banks of three means each person gets a side, and the arrangement is sensible: a shallow 90mm drawer at the top of each bank for small things, then two 140mm drawers below for clothes. At 1310mm wide it needs a proper wall and will not squeeze into a box room. At 720mm it stays low, which makes it reasonable in a hall or a living room too.

Measure first

Wide furniture is bought in the room and delivered through the hall. Measure both.

1310mm needs an unbroken run of wall, and at 720mm it will pass under most sills — check yours rather than assume. The drawers run 360mm front to back, so allow around half a metre of clear floor in front: enough for the drawer, and enough for two people to be at their own side of the chest at once. On the way in it is one box at 57kg and 1310mm long, so the turn at the top of the stairs decides it.

See it before you buy

The thing worth checking in person is the shallow drawer. Open a 90mm one and a 140mm one side by side and you will know whether the arrangement suits the way you put clothes away. Living with it

New drawers are stiff and this chest has six of them, so give it a month before you form an opinion — the runners bed in with use, and the two shallow drawers will always feel lighter than the deeper four. Oak responds to a heated room: expect a slight tightening through a dry winter and expect it to reverse when the heating goes off. The oak colour deepens a little over the first year, so try not to leave one end of a 1310mm chest in full sun and the other in shade. Wipe it dry, and fit the anti-topple kit before you load the drawers.

How are the six drawers arranged?
Two banks of three. Each bank has a shallow drawer at 580 × 360 × 90mm and two deeper ones at 580 × 360 × 140mm.

What are the shallow drawers for?
Socks, underwear, chargers, jewellery. 90mm is too little for folded jumpers and exactly right for the clutter that otherwise lives on top of the chest.

Is the anti-topple kit included?
Yes, and it fixes to the wall. In a house with children, fit it before you put anything in the drawers.

Can I get a hoover underneath?
Yes. There is 160mm of clearance to the floor.

How much space does a drawer need in front?
About half a metre. The drawer runs 360mm and you need room to stand at it.
