A low oak frame that finishes flat at the foot.

The Okayama Bed is the lowest frame in the Okayama collection: oak, with steel and MDF in the structure, in a natural oak colour, made in a 4ft 6in double and a 5ft king. The headboard tops out at 830mm and there is no raised footboard — the foot end of the frame runs flat. Both sizes come through the Ballincollig showroom, and either can be made up for you to try. Who it’s for

This is a bed for a room where height is the problem and floor length is not. At 830mm to the top of the headboard it sits below most window sills and goes under a sloped attic ceiling that a tall board would foul. The catch is the footprint. The king is 2200mm from head to foot, so in a bedroom under three metres deep it takes nearly all the floor and you end up sidling past the end of it. The double, at 1920mm, is far easier to place. And with no footboard a duvet hangs off the end rather than tucking in — some people want exactly that, and some miss the board.

The double is 280mm shorter front to back, which is often what decides between the two sizes.

The double takes a 135 × 190cm double mattress and the king takes a 150 × 200cm king. Neither comes with the frame; pick separately from the mattresses. Underneath you have 130mm, so a shallow under-bed box goes in and the deep ones will not. Measure the landing and the stair turn as well as the bedroom — three boxes have to get up there.

A photograph flattens a low bed and makes the headboard look taller than 830mm. Sitting on the edge and seeing where the board lands against your own back is the only way to settle it. Living with it

A new frame beds in. Over the first few weeks the joints settle under real weight and a bolt that was tight on assembly day can work a quarter-turn loose; go round them with the key at a fortnight and once more a month later, and a creak that has started will usually stop there. Check the slats are still square in their supports while the key is in your hand. Oak moves with the heating season too — once the radiators go on the timber dries a little, the frame may tick at night, and it settles again by spring. None of that is a fault and none of it needs a tradesman.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks from the day the order goes in. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge, and the date is confirmed with you before you pay.

This frame needs full assembly and arrives in three boxes — 77kg for the double, 80kg for the king. Build it in the room it is staying in: put together, the king is 1820mm across and will not come back out through a standard door.

Questions people ask

Is a mattress included?
No. The 4ft 6in frame takes a 135 × 190cm double mattress and the 5ft frame takes a 150 × 200cm king.

Will under-bed boxes fit?
The clearance to the floor is 130mm and all 130mm of it is usable, because no rail hangs below the frame. Anything over 13cm tall will not slide under.

How high is the headboard?
830mm from the floor, on both sizes.

Is there a footboard?
No. The frame runs flat at the foot end, which is why the bed looks as low as it does.

How many boxes arrive, and how heavy are they?
Three boxes either way. The double comes to 77kg all in, the king to 80kg.
