No doors. What you hang is what you see.
The Okayama Open Wardrobe is an open oak and steel frame from our Okayama collection, with an MDF element, in an oak colour. It carries a hanging rail and five shelves, stands 800mm wide, 450mm deep and 1,750mm high, and weighs 48.8kg. Walking around one is really the only way to judge an open unit, and that is what the Ballincollig showroom is for. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.
Who it’s for
This is a small footprint — 800mm across and only 450mm deep — so it goes into a box room, a rented room, a room where a carcass with swinging doors would block the door or the window. It suits somebody tidy. Everything is on show all the time: there is no door to close on a bad week. It is also shallower than a closed wardrobe, and a standard hanger is around 430 to 450mm wide, so shoulders sit right at the front edge of the frame — bring one of your own hangers in and try it. If you want clothes out of sight and out of the dust, buy something with doors.
Chosen by Paul
Paul says: “An open wardrobe keeps you honest — you can’t shut a door on a heap. If you’re a folder and a hanger, it’s grand. If you’re neither, don’t buy it.”
At 48.8kg it is also light, which matters if you move house every couple of years.
What you’re getting
- Oak and steel with MDF, in an oak colour.
- An open frame: one hanging rail and five shelves, no doors.
- Four shelf compartments at 400mm wide, 280mm deep, 370mm high.
- One larger compartment at 460mm wide, 400mm deep, 300mm high.
- The shelves are fixed, not adjustable — the spacings above are what you get.
- 160mm of clearance to the floor.
- An anti-topple kit is included, and on an open frame it should be fitted to the wall.
- Assembly required. Two boxes, 48.8kg gross.
Measure first
The frame, built, measures:
| Dimension | mm | cm |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 800 | 80 |
| Depth | 450 | 45 |
| Height | 1,750 | 175 |
The 450mm depth is the frame, not the clothes. With no doors, a shirt on a hanger sits proud of the front, so allow a little more than 450mm for an alcove. Tilting it upright takes around 1,810mm of clear floor-to-ceiling space. Check the ceiling, then the landing and the turn at the top of the stairs — it comes up in two manageable boxes, but the turn is still where furniture gets stuck.

Living with it
Two things happen with an open frame, and neither is a fault. Dust settles on the shoulders of anything left hanging for months, so shake out what you wear rarely, or keep those things in the deeper compartment. And a bolted steel frame beds in: everything is tight the day you build it, then the joints take up a fraction as the unit settles into place. Go round the fixings with the supplied key after three or four weeks and nip them up. The oak colour will lift slightly on the side facing the window over the first year.

Questions people ask
Can I move the shelves around?
No. They are fixed. Four compartments at 400 x 280 x 370mm and one at 460 x 400 x 300mm, and that is the layout for good.
Will my hangers fit at 450mm deep?
Most standard hangers are 430 to 450mm across, so they fit but sit close to the front edge. Bring one in and try it against the frame.
Do the clothes get dusty?
Yes, over time — that is the trade for an open unit. It is what a wardrobe without doors does.
How long a coat will hang on the rail?
The compartment sizes are recorded but the rail height is not. Email us and someone will get a measure off one and come back to you with the figure.
Does it need fixing to the wall?
Yes. The anti-topple kit is included. An open frame carries its weight high once clothes are on the rail, so fit it.
Can I get a vacuum underneath?
Yes. There is 160mm of clearance to the floor.
