The Rustique 2 Drawer Bedside Table is a two-drawer table from the Rustique collection, made in Mindy ash with a natural finish, and at 665mm it is the tallest bedside we carry. It is 500mm wide and 400mm deep, with two drawers. It comes through the Ballincollig showroom, and we would far rather you lifted a drawer out yourself than took our word for it. Who it’s for

This one is for a tall bed. Divans with a deep mattress, ottoman frames, anything where the top of the made-up bed is sitting at 650mm or more — those are the beds that make a standard bedside look like a footstool, and 665mm answers them. Beside a low frame it will loom, and the honest advice is to look at something in the 550s instead. It is also the widest of our bedsides at 500mm, so it wants a real gap beside the bed rather than a squeeze; in a small room with a bed pushed near the wall, 50mm matters more than it sounds. The drawers take the ordinary bedside cargo — a book, a lamp flex tidied away, medication, a notebook — and the drawer opening is 323 × 269mm. Two of them either side of a double is how most people buy them.

Measure first

Measure floor to mattress top before anything else. Then measure the gap.

665mm is tall enough to matter in two other ways. If a windowsill or a radiator runs along the wall beside your bed, check it clears — a bedside that sits over a radiator is a bedside that gets a warm top all winter, which timber does not enjoy. In the room, leave 500mm of wall and roughly 300mm of clear air in front so the drawers open right out rather than halfway.

See it before you buy

Grain and colour vary piece to piece on a natural timber like this, and no photograph will show you that — you have to look at the actual wood. The showroom is at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968). Open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you along. Living with it

Timber moves, and Mindy ash moves visibly. Through the autumn, when the heating comes on and the air in the room dries out, the boards give up a little moisture and the drawers can tighten; in a damp spring they ease off again. This is the wood doing what wood does, not a fault, and it settles into its own rhythm after the first year. Expect the colour to warm slightly over the first months as the finish settles; that is the point of a natural finish. Because you build this one yourself, go back over the fixings after two or three weeks; joints bed in as the piece takes weight and a half-turn then saves a wobble later. Damp cloth, dried straight after, and keep it out of direct sun on a south-facing wall.

How tall is it against a normal divan?
665mm. That suits a made-up bed with a top around 650mm or higher. Below about 600mm it will stand noticeably above the mattress.

What fits in a drawer?
The opening is 323 × 269mm — a paperback, a hardback laid flat, glasses, a charger, a small first-aid box. It is a bedside drawer, not a clothes drawer.

Is it flat-packed?
Yes. One box at 18.7kg, and it needs assembling rather than just having legs fitted.

Will two of them match?
They will match in size and finish, but Mindy ash varies in grain and tone from piece to piece. If you want a close pair, ask us to set two side by side in the showroom and pick them yourself.
