The Rustique 5 Drawer Chest is an upright chest in mindy ash, finished natural, from our Rustique collection. It measures 900mm across and stands 1020mm high, so it takes its space from the wall rather than from the floor. Who it’s for

This is the chest for a bedroom where the floor is spoken for and the wall is not. At 900mm wide it slots into the run between a wardrobe and a window; at 1020mm high the top sits at chest height on most adults, which means a lamp and a tray on it are at hand rather than down at knee level. The drawer interiors are 338 × 329mm — roughly a third of a metre each way — so folded clothes go in comfortably and a shirt laid out flat and unfolded does not. If you want to lay things out across a full width, the 7 drawer chest in the same collection is 1300mm wide and lower, and it is the better answer. This one suits one person’s clothes, or the second chest in a shared room.

Measure first

Take the width and the height, then take the floor in front of it.

The case is 450mm deep, and a drawer needs to come most of the way out before you can see the back of it. Leave around half a metre of clear floor in front, and check that a drawer will not meet the corner of the bed or the swing of the door. The box weighs 50kg, so measure the landing and the turn at the top of the stairs as well as the bedroom.

See it before you buy

A photograph will not tell you how a drawer runs when it is three quarters out, or what a natural finish looks like in daylight. The showroom is at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968). We are open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you along. Living with it

Timber moves a little, and it moves most in the first winter when the heating goes on and the air in the room dries out. A drawer that slid easily in September can feel tight in December and easy again in March. That is the material doing what it does, not a fault. New drawers are also stiffer than ones that have been opened a thousand times, and they loosen with use. If one sticks, rub an ordinary household candle along the runner it sits on and try it again. Keep the chest off a radiator if you can, and wipe spills off the top rather than leaving them to sit.

We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. Either way the date is agreed with you and confirmed before you pay.

It arrives in one box and it needs assembling. At 50kg that is a two-person job, and it is easier done in the room it is going to live in than carried up assembled.

Questions people ask

How big is each drawer inside?
338 × 329mm. All five are the same size, so anything that fits one fits the rest.

Will a folded jumper lie flat in it?
Folded, yes. A shirt opened out flat is wider than 338mm, so shirts go in folded here.

Does it need building?
Yes. It comes in one box and requires assembly.

How is it different from the 7 drawer chest?
That one is 1300mm wide and 885mm high, with shallow drawers as well as deep ones. This is the upright version: narrower, taller, five drawers all alike.

How much floor do I need in front of it?
Around half a metre, so a drawer can come out far enough to reach the back.
