Who it’s for

A main bedroom of ordinary size. At 980 wide and 955 high it is almost square-on, which is the shape most people picture when they say “chest of drawers” — it fills a wall without dominating it and the top lands just under a metre, handy for a lamp and a mirror. The drawers come in three sizes: 355 × 335 × 71mm, 780 × 335 × 131mm and 780 × 335 × 181mm. Be honest with yourself about the 71mm ones before you buy. That is a drawer for socks, chargers and jewellery, not for folded clothes — so if nearly everything you own is jumpers, count the drawers that will actually take them. It also matters that this is a mixed construction, MDF with oak and pine rather than solid timber throughout. That keeps the weight down to 52kg for a chest of this size, and it is worth knowing rather than discovering.

Measure first

Just under a metre each way, which sounds easy and still needs checking against the bed.

The drawers are 335mm deep in a 450mm case, so leave about half a metre of clear floor in front — a 780mm drawer pulled out into a walkway is wide as well as long, and it is the corner of the bed it usually meets. At 955mm high the top clears most window sills, so this is one that can go under a window if the wall is short elsewhere.

See it before you buy

The difference between a 71mm drawer and a 181mm one is obvious in the hand and invisible in a photograph, and five drawers in three sizes is a thing you have to open to understand. Living with it

A mixed construction is steadier through the year than solid timber — the MDF parts barely notice the heating season, while the oak and pine in it will move a little when the air dries out in winter. So expect small seasonal changes rather than large ones. New drawers are stiff until they have been used for a few weeks, particularly the wide 780mm ones, which need to be pushed square rather than shoved at one corner. Push them home from the middle and they will settle. Keep the top dry, wipe spills as they happen, and if a drawer starts to drag, a household candle rubbed along the runner is the old fix and still the best one.

It arrives in one box at 52kg and it needs assembling. Two people, and do it in the room it will stand in — a built chest is harder to get through a door than a flat box is.

How shallow is the shallowest drawer?
71mm inside, 355mm wide and 335mm deep. Small items only — a folded jumper will not fit.

How wide are the big drawers inside?
780mm, at 131mm and 181mm high — most of a metre across. Two stacks of folded t-shirts sit side by side in one with room to spare.

Is it solid wood?
No. It is MDF with oak and pine, in a light oak colour. The black version of this chest is specified as solid oak.

Can it stand under a window?
Usually. It is 955mm high, which clears most sills — measure yours to be sure.
