One turned-spindle oak bed, in three sizes.
The Wycombe Spindle Bed is the turned-spindle frame in the Wycombe collection: oak, light wood colour, headboard 1090mm off the floor and a 365mm footboard on every size. It is made as a 4ft 6in double, a 5ft king and a 6ft super king — one bed, three footprints. All three sizes come through the Ballincollig showroom. Email info@mulberryhouse.ie for stock & delivery questions, any time now.
Who it’s for
Which size you take is the whole decision here. The double is 1450mm wide for a 1350mm mattress — 50mm of timber either side — which is why it goes into second bedrooms and small doubles that a 5ft frame defeats. The king, at 1570 by 2100mm, suits most main bedrooms. The super king is the one to think hard about: 1900mm wide, 450mm more than the double, and in a bedroom of three and a half metres that leaves under 800mm split between two sides. Near four metres wide it looks right rather than crammed. The headboard stays at 1090mm across all three, so a bigger room buys a wider bed, not a taller board.
Chosen by Paul
Paul says: “Buy up a size if the floor takes it, but measure both sides of the bed, not just the wall it goes against. Nineteen hundred wide leaves you nothing at all in a three-and-a-half-metre room.”
Masking tape down on the bedroom carpet for a day settles most of these arguments.

Measure first
These are the outside measurements of the frame, size by size — not the mattress that goes in it.
| Dimension | mm | cm |
|---|---|---|
| 4ft 6in double — width × depth × height | 1450 × 2000 × 1090 | 145 × 200 × 109 |
| 5ft king — width × depth × height | 1570 × 2100 × 1090 | 157 × 210 × 109 |
| 6ft super king — width × depth × height | 1900 × 2120 × 1090 | 190 × 212 × 109 |
The double takes a 135 × 190cm mattress, the king a 150 × 200cm, the super king a 180 × 200cm. No size comes with one; the mattresses are a separate choice, and worth making in person. Add walking space to the widths above — 600mm down one side at least, or you cannot make the bed. The mattress comes up the stairs too, and a 180cm super king is a two-person job on a tight turn.
See it before you buy
Spindles are something to run a hand along rather than look at, and no photograph gives an honest sense of how wide 1900mm of super king really is. Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968. Seven days a week, no appointment needed, no hurry from our side. The layout changes as often as the stock does, so ask for this frame when you arrive: if it is not made up we will bring it out of the store room, or get it in for you within a few days, and you can lie on it before you decide anything. Get directions.
Living with it
Every new frame moves a little before it stops. Go round the bolts with the key after a couple of weeks and again a month later — headboard fixings first on a spindle bed, since that is where a lean puts the load, then the side rails. A creak in week three is almost always a fixing, not a fault. Lift a corner of the mattress when you change the sheets and check the slats have not walked out of their seats. Oak takes up and gives back moisture as the heating season turns, so expect a little movement and the odd tick at night, settling by spring. That is timber behaving normally, not damage; ten minutes with a spanner twice a year is the whole of the maintenance.
Delivery, assembly & aftercare
Allow around four weeks, whichever size you choose. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you collect from the showroom at no charge, and the date is confirmed before you pay.
Full assembly is needed and the bed arrives in two boxes whichever size you choose — 53.5kg for the double, 58.35kg for the king, 65.3kg for the super king. The long box carries the rails, so check the hall and stair turn for something over two metres. Build it in the room it is staying in — assembled, none of the three comes back out through a door.
Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.
Questions people ask
What mattress does each size take?
135 × 190cm for the double, 150 × 200cm for the king, 180 × 200cm for the super king. None is included.
How much bigger is each size in the room?
The king is 120mm wider and 100mm deeper than the double; the super king is another 330mm wider and 20mm deeper than the king.
Will under-bed boxes fit?
There is 180mm of usable height under the frame in all three sizes, so a shallow box goes under and a deep one will not.
Is the headboard taller on the bigger sizes?
No. It is 1090mm from the floor on all three, and the footboard is 365mm on all three.
Which size fits a small double bedroom?
The 4ft 6in, at 1450 × 2000mm.
