Who it’s for

Black turns a run of turned spindles into a drawing. Against a pale wall and light bedding, each one reads as a separate vertical and the headboard becomes the first thing you see in the room — which is the point of buying this rather than the oak. The other half of that: in a dark room, or one that gets little daylight, the spindles lose their outline and the frame goes heavy in the corner. Size is the second decision. The double is 1450 × 2000mm, small enough for a second bedroom or a modest main room; the king is 1570 × 2120mm, and it is that depth — 20mm more than the light wood king — that catches people out against a door swing or a radiator.

Measure first

Frame measurements, outside to outside, for each size.

The double takes a 135 × 190cm mattress and the king takes a 150 × 200cm; neither size is supplied with one, and the mattresses are picked on their own merits. Underneath there is 180mm of usable height, so measure an under-bed box lid to floor rather than trusting the label. One thought that belongs only to the black version: if the bed is going against a dark or patterned wall, hold something black up against it first, because the spindle profile is the whole design and it can disappear.

See it before you buy

Black furniture photographs badly and looks better in life, which is an awkward thing for a website to admit — and no screen shows you what a run of turned spindles does when daylight crosses it. Living with it

Treat the first month as bedding in, in either size. Bolts loosen slightly as the frame takes real weight for the first time, so go round them at a fortnight and again at six weeks — headboard fixings first, then the side rails — and lift a corner of the mattress to see the slats are still square. That pair of checks accounts for nearly every creak reported on a new bed. The timber under the black finish is still timber and moves with the heating season: dry air takes a little moisture out of it, joints may click at night, and it comes back over the spring. A dark finish also shows a scuff sooner than a pale one, which is honest rather than faulty. A dry cloth along the tops of the spindles once a week handles it; nothing wet, nothing abrasive.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks from the day you order, in either size. Delivery goes across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge. We confirm the date with you before you pay.

Full assembly, and two boxes either way — 52.9kg for the double, 56.85kg for the king. Take the boxes into the bedroom before opening them; built, neither size will come back out through a door.

The same frame and headboard. The colour is black, and it is made in two sizes rather than three — no super king.

What mattress does each size take?
