Most people replace a mattress two years after it stopped being right. They wait for it to fail. The Estate is the other way of doing it entirely — 31.5cm deep, six thousand springs, then wool, denim and natural latex hand-tufted under a woven damask cover. You sink in, and then, just when you expect to keep sinking, it holds you. Put it on an ottoman that swallows the spare duvet, put the winged Janus behind it, and stand the Artisan wardrobe on the far wall — oak, lime-washed, with the hand-turned bobbin detail that took me a while to stop looking at — and the main bedroom stops being the room you tidy last.

The spare room is where good intentions go to sit — a mattress bought in a hurry a decade ago, a headboard that came with the house. And yet it is the one room your family quietly judges you on. The Pause is a stitched pillow top floating on a thousand pocket springs, so you settle into the bed rather than lie on it. Put it on a sprung-top divan for a little more give, stand the tall, softly panelled Capri behind it, and give them the Hatfield chest — three oak drawers, clean lines, nothing to argue with — so a guest can actually unpack. Nobody offers to go home early.

This is the most common conversation on the showroom floor, and it is never really about firmness — it is about which of you gives in. The Lull refuses to make either of you. It gives on the surface and holds underneath, every spring individually pocketed so neither of you feels the other turn. And because the whole spring unit is encased in foam, the edge of the bed is as supportive as the middle: you can sleep right to the border, or sit on it to put your socks on, without the roll-off. Under it, the full-opening ottoman. Behind it, the Queen Anne. Across from it, the Colonna chest — a curved top and fluted drawer fronts that pick up the same line as the headboard, and three drawers, which is one and a half each.

There is a particular customer who walks in having been told to get something firmer, and has been sold three mediums in a row. The Drift is what they were describing all along: a heavy-gauge open-coil unit in the traditional orthopaedic style, reinforced to the edges, so the side of the bed is as firm as the middle. Nothing sinks and nothing rolls. It is double-sided, so you flip it as well as rotate it, and it repays you for years. Stand it on a leg divan in square walnut, put the floor-standing Donore behind it, and set the Wycombe dressing table under the window — oak, one drawer, legs you can see daylight through — and you have the cleanest bedroom in this look book, and the easiest to hoover under.
