A bed frame with exactly 150mm of clear floor underneath it.

The Bibury bed is the frame the rest of the Bibury bedroom range is built around, made in a 4′6″ double and a 5′ king. It is a natural-coloured frame using MDF, plywood, rubber wood, oak, pine, rattan and polyester, and it stands on 150mm legs. Both sizes come through the Ballincollig showroom, and we can have one out for you to sit on the edge of and see how far you drop. Who it’s for

The double takes up 1430mm across and 2020mm front to back; the king takes 1580 × 2120mm. In a bedroom three metres wide the double leaves about 785mm of walking room each side and the king about 710mm — both workable, since 600mm is roughly where a room starts to feel tight. The headboard is 1150mm on both sizes, high enough to lean back against. Where it does not suit is a bedroom doing all its storage under the bed: there is 150mm of usable height under the side rail and no more.

These are the outside measurements of the finished frame — headboard, footboard and rails — not the mattress. Depth is the length of the bed.

The frame takes a standard mattress: 135 × 190cm for the 4′6″ double, 150 × 200cm for the 5′ king. What catches people out is the way in rather than the bedroom — the side rails run a little over two metres inside their box, so measure the turn at the top of the stairs before the delivery date is set.

See it before you buy

A photograph will not tell you how firm the rattan feels under your hand or how the headboard takes your weight when you lean back on it. Both take a moment to settle in person. We are at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork (P31 W968), open seven days a week, no appointment needed, and nobody will hurry you. A bed takes up more room than anything else we sell, so only some of them are up at a time and the display is rotated — ask for the Bibury and we will bring it up from the store room, or have it in for you within a few days. Living with it

A new bed frame beds in. For the first few weeks the joints are taking your weight for the first time, the slats are settling into their housings, and a bolt that was tight on the day of assembly can work a quarter-turn loose. That is normal, and it is behind nearly every creak reported in the first month. Go round the bolts with the key that came in the box after three or four weeks of use, and again when the heating goes on and moves the timber slightly. Two minutes of work saves a lot of worry.

Delivery, assembly & aftercare

Allow around four weeks from the day you order. We deliver across Cork and nationwide, or you can collect from the showroom at no charge, and your date is confirmed with you before you pay anything.

It arrives in two boxes and needs full assembly — headboard, footboard, side rails and slats, built in the room the bed will stand in.

Questions people ask

What mattress size does it take?
135 × 190cm for the 4′6″ double and 150 × 200cm for the 5′ king. The frame is sold on its own without a mattress — ours are at /collections/mattresses.

Will my under-bed boxes fit?
Only if they are under 150mm tall. That is the clearance to the floor and the usable height under the rail on both sizes.

Is the footboard high enough to tuck a duvet behind?
350mm on the double and 305mm on the king.

How heavy is it to get upstairs?
53.4kg for the double and 58kg for the king, split across two boxes.
