“What if the fabric looks different in our room?” With a made-to-order piece, that’s the worry worth taking seriously, because once it’s covered, it’s covered. The Chesterfield Footstool is made to order in your choice of 34 fabrics — browns, blues, greys, greens, yellows, creams and a white — so the colour is yours to decide, and the way to decide it is in person. Ask us at our showroom in Ballincollig about seeing the fabrics in daylight, next to the photo of your sofa on your phone.

The fabrics, in plain terms

• 100% polyester: most of the range, across every colour family
• 85% polyester, 12% cotton, 3% linen: a group of greys, blues, a yellow, a brown and a green
• 87% polyester, 13% cotton: greys, a green, a brown, a white and a cream

Sizes

At 37.5cm high it sits lower than a typical sofa seat, so it’s a footstool first and a perch second. It’s 95cm square: mark that out with tape before you order.

The fabrics, in daylight

The showroom is at Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968, open Monday to Saturday, 9.30am–5pm, closed Sundays. Nobody will hurry you, and no appointment is needed. Because each one is made to order, we’ll talk you through the size, the buttoning and the storage, and you can ask which of the fabrics we can show you. Bring a photo of your sofa and take your time. Living with it

Most of its life is spent under feet: a Saturday breakfast tray, the Sunday papers, slippers kicked off in front of the fire. Because the top is deep-buttoned, it isn’t flat, so a tray is the way to set a cup down. New upholstery behaves like new upholstery: the foam and polyester fibre filling softens over the first weeks and the fabric settles into the buttoning. That’s normal. Blankets and spare cushions go underneath the lift-up top.

Will the buttoning flatten?
The filling softens a little as it settles, which is normal for new upholstery; plumping the top now and then keeps it even.
