Paul’s pro tip: a rough-hewn block like the Iowa wants a bit of air around it. Give it 10cm clear of the sofa arm rather than pushing it tight, so the stepped shape reads as a shape and not as a lump of timber wedged in. A lamp with a slim base on top keeps the proportions right.

The Iowa in natural is a chunky side table 40cm wide, 40cm deep and 55cm high, made from mango wood solids and veneer and left rough-hewn so the surface of the wood shows. The stepped, blocky shape is the design: a plinth that rises in steps rather than a top on legs, standing 5cm off the floor. It comes in one box, made up, no assembly, and weighs 15.3kg. At 55cm it sits a little above most sofa arms, a steady place for a glass or a lamp, and it is the warm, solid thing in a room that is otherwise mostly fabric. It also comes whitewashed.

What does rough-hewn mean here?

The surface shows tool marks and the natural texture of the mango wood rather than being sanded flat. It is sealed, so it is smooth enough to touch and wipe, but it looks hand-cut.

Is the top level enough for a glass?

Yes. The top is flat; it is the sides that carry the texture.

Will it suit a modern room?

In a plain modern room it is the piece with character; in a rustic room it is at home. It does not suit a very formal, polished scheme.

Can it go in a bedroom?

At 40cm square and 55cm high it works as a bedside beside a mid-height bed, with no drawer.
