Maddox Coffee Table

Black oak, compact and easy to get round, for the smaller sitting room.

Paul's pro tip

In a smaller room a black table does less to crowd the floor than you'd expect, because the eye reads it as a shadow. Keep it to the size of the gap, not the size of the sofa: at 75cm, the Maddox leaves room to walk round and still takes a board and a few glasses.

The Maddox is a 75cm by 75cm coffee table, 35cm high, with solid rubberwood legs in black and a black oak-veneer top. It's a modern take on mid-century style, made to come flat with less packaging and to assemble easily, with all the tools supplied. Light at 9kg packed, it moves where the evening needs it.

How hard is the assembly?

It's designed to be easy: legs or feet only, and the tools for the job are in the box.

Will black show marks?

Dust and fingerprints show a little more on black. A soft cloth before people arrive and coasters under cold glasses keep it right.

Is it heavy?

No, 9kg packed. One person can move it when the floor is wanted.

Is 35cm too low?

It's a relaxed height, just below most sofa seats. Easy for a glass; low if you'd like to eat from it.
