Ninety centimetres wide, 35 deep: storage that stays out of the way.

“Will it stick out into the room?” It’s the first thing people ask about a sideboard in our Ballincollig showroom, and fair enough: it’s the piece you walk past twenty times a day, usually with a dish or a basket of washing in your hands. The Malvern 1 Door 4 Drawer Sideboard is 35cm deep, a good bit shallower than a standard 60cm kitchen worktop, and 90cm wide, so it fits a short wall or the gap beside a door.

Inside, four drawers and a cupboard take the clutter that otherwise lands on the table. The drawers are 34.3cm wide and 29.4cm deep inside, from a shallow 8cm top drawer for cutlery and tea towels to deeper 13.5cm ones for placemats, candles and the phone chargers. The cupboard is 38.7cm wide, 30cm deep and 65cm high, with an adjustable shelf.

The measurements

Skirting boards push any sideboard slightly off the wall, so if the space is tight, add the depth of your skirting to the 35cm.

The first few weeks

New drawers are a little stiff until they’ve been opened a few dozen times, and that eases. Oak and oak veneer respond to the heating, so a door that closes snugly in autumn may sit a hair differently in spring. Both are normal. Only the feet need fitting on arrival, and it comes with an anti-topple kit to fix it to the wall: in a house with small climbers, that’s worth doing on day one.
