Light oak, one drawer, and a round handle you can find in the dark.

The Malvern is a rectangular side table 45cm wide, 40cm deep and 55cm high, in oak solids and veneers with rubberwood in the frame, with a single drawer fronted by a classic round handle. The finish is natural, light and open-grained. It arrives in one box at 14kg and the legs fit on, with 35cm of clearance underneath. At 55cm it sits just above most sofa arms. The drawer is what makes it earn its place when people come over: coasters, the corkscrew and the remote go in, and the top is clear for the glass and the lamp.

Measure first

A drawer needs room to pull out, so allow 30cm or so in front of it. Beside a sofa that means the drawer faces the room, not the arm. Check the sofa arm too: most sit around 45 to 50cm, so at 55cm the Malvern stands just above, a comfortable height for a lamp. The 40cm depth is slimmer than most side tables, which is useful in a narrow room.

Is it solid oak?

Oak solids and oak veneers over MDF, with rubberwood in the frame. The surfaces you see and touch are oak.

How big is the drawer?

A single shallow drawer the width of the table. Coasters, a corkscrew, a notebook and the remotes fit; a bottle does not.

Does light oak go with grey?

Light oak against grey upholstery is one of the easier pairings; the oak warms the grey and the grey calms the oak.

What goes with it

The Milano 1 Drawer Side Table is the other oak side table with a drawer, 5cm taller with a chevron top, if you want to compare two ways of doing the same job.
