An oak table two metres long, standing on chevron-slatted legs.
“Will eight of us actually fit, or will somebody end up perched on a corner?” It’s the question most people bring to a big table, and it’s a fair one.
Here’s the answer from the figures for the Okayama, an oak table in the dining range we sell from Ballincollig, near Cork. It’s 2,000mm long and 1,000mm wide, and it seats six to eight. Allow roughly 60cm of table edge per person and the long sides give you three places each, with a little to spare; one at each end makes eight. Underneath, there’s 710mm of clear height from the floor to the top, so knees and chair seats go in without a fight.
Will it fit the room?
| Dimension | mm | cm |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 2,000 | 200 |
| Width | 1,000 | 100 |
| Height | 750 | 75 |
| Clear height under the top | 710 | 71 |
Measure first: a chair needs about 90cm behind it to be pulled out and sat on. Add that to each side and each end and the comfortable room works out at around 3.8 by 2.8 metres. Smaller than that and it will still go in, but the person against the wall will be climbing over two others every time they want to get out.
Seeing the Okayama
Much of our dining furniture is set out in the showroom; ask about the Okayama and we’ll tell you what’s out that week and what we can show you. Bring the measurements of your room with you either way. We’ll go through the 90cm-behind-each-chair sums together and talk you through the oak and those chevron legs.
Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968. Monday to Saturday, 9.30am–5pm. Closed Sundays. No appointment needed; nobody will hurry you. Get directions
Living with new oak
Oak is a natural material and it answers to the room it’s in. For the first few weeks, while it settles into your heating, it can move a little; that’s normal and it’s the timber doing what timber does. Keep it a sensible distance from a radiator or a stove, use mats under hot dishes, and wipe spills rather than leaving them for the morning. The grain and colour will vary a little from the photographs, because no two oak trees are alike.
Getting it home
It comes in one box, about 72kg as packed, and it needs assembling. Allow around four weeks. Delivered across Cork and nationwide, or collected from the showroom in Ballincollig at no charge. We’ll confirm your delivery date before you pay.
Other questions
Is the top solid oak?
The chevron legs are solid oak slats, and the Okayama range as a whole is solid oak and oak veneers. If the make-up of the top matters to you, ask us and we’ll confirm it for this table.
Does it extend?
No, it’s a fixed two-metre table. If you’d like one that grows for the bigger evenings, have a look at the Onda Extending Dining Table.
What goes with it?
Two pieces from the same range: the Okayama 2 Drawer 2 Door Sideboard, whose top sits just below the table, and the tall Okayama 2 Door Cocktail Cabinet for the glasses. For seating, browse our dining chairs.
Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.
