Soho Side Table

Sixty centimetres of whitewashed slats and white marble: the lamp table beside a tall sofa.

A Thursday in November. The table is cleared, the coats are still on the stairs, and six people have fitted onto a sofa for four. The Soho is at the arm with a lamp on it and three glasses crowded round the base of the lamp, which is what a 40cm marble top is for on a night like that.

The Soho is a side table 40cm wide, 40cm deep and 60cm high, with a white Indian marble top on a base of gently sloping mango wood slats in a whitewashed, sand-blasted finish. It arrives in two boxes at 17.8kg and only the top needs setting on. At 60cm it is a lamp table, standing above most sofa arms, with the shade at seated eye level. The slatted base is the detail: light moves through it, and the pale wood against the white stone keeps a tall table from feeling heavy. There are matching pieces in the Soho range.

Is the marble real?

Yes, white Indian marble. Each top is its own piece of stone, so the veining varies from table to table.

What does sand-blasted mean on wood?

The surface of the mango slats has been blasted to open the grain and give it texture, then whitewashed. It feels textured rather than smooth.

Is 60cm too tall for my sofa?

It stands above most sofa arms, which sit around 45 to 50cm; that is what makes it a lamp table. For a glass level with the arm, the Marmo at 50cm suits better.
