A single oak stool with a saddle seat and slim tapered legs.
Lunch was supposed to be a sandwich at a kitchen counter in Ballincollig. Then someone opened a bottle of red, the crusts were pushed to one side, and by the time anyone looked up the light had gone. Nobody moved to the dining room. The stools were grand.
The stool itself
The Tonto is a backless oak bar stool with a moulded saddle seat and slim tapered legs in a matte lacquer. It’s sold singly, in the natural oak colourway. The seat is 67.5cm off the floor, which puts it at kitchen-counter height rather than bar height.
- Oak, with a matte lacquer finish on the legs
- Moulded saddle seat, no back
- No assembly: it comes ready to use, in one box
- About 7kg packed, so it moves from counter to table in one hand

The usual advice is 25–30cm between the seat and the worktop above it. That puts the Tonto at counters of roughly 92–98cm. On a standard 90cm kitchen worktop it’s a touch close, so measure yours to the top of the worktop before you order. A bar-height counter of a metre or more is another matter: the Tonto would leave you low there, and a seat nearer 75cm will suit it better.
What sits well with it
Natural oak goes quietly next to most kitchens: warm against white units, a near relation of an oak worktop, a lift beside dark painted cabinets. For tables and other seating to pair it with, have a look through our dining collection.
Try the height in person
Heritage Walk, The Quadrants, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, P31 W968, Monday to Saturday, 9.30am–5pm, closed Sundays; no appointment needed. A few minutes on different stools against a counter will tell you more about the height than any table of figures. Get directions

Worth asking
How many stools do I get? One. Order as many as your counter has room for; about 60cm of worktop per stool is a comfortable spacing, and it’s how the long lunches stay friendly.
What does a saddle seat feel like? It’s shaped rather than flat, dipping slightly in the middle, so you settle into the seat rather than perch on top of it.
Will the oak change colour? Oak can mellow a little in strong sun over the years. That’s the timber, not the finish failing.
Any question, any at all: email info@mulberryhouse.ie and a person in the showroom will answer it.
One more seat at the counter, and no hurry.
