Vancouver Large Kitchen Island

“It’s 214cm long. How do we even get it into the kitchen?”

By planning the route before it arrives. The Vancouver Large comes in two boxes and only the top needs fitting, so the base travels on its own: 214cm long, 74cm deep and a little over 90cm high. Measure the front door, the tightest turn in the hall and the kitchen doorway, and if anything is close, email us the numbers and the showroom team in Ballincollig will talk it through with you. It’s heavy too, about 153kg across both boxes, which is why the route is worth planning rather than improvising on the day.

Is it too much island?

That’s the second worry, and the answer is in the floor rather than the island. Allow roughly 90cm clear on every side you walk or work, and the whole thing asks for a space of about 4m by 2.5m. In a kitchen that size it becomes the table for the ordinary hours: coffee at one end, the post sorted into piles at the other, pastry rolled out on the cool of the marble.

The sizes

Three wide, shallow drawers suit cutlery, placemats and the odds and ends every kitchen collects. At 94cm, stools with a seat of about 64–69cm work well; our Whitney bar stools, at 65cm, sit comfortably under it.

Living with it

This is pine solids and veneers with inset marble, and both are natural materials. In a warm kitchen, near a range or a radiator, the timber will shift slightly in its first winter; that’s wood settling, not a fault. Drawers loosen up as they’re used. Marble marks if acid sits on it, so a mat under the fruit bowl and a quick wipe after lemons or wine keeps the top right. Fit the anti-topple kit that’s supplied with it.

How is it different from the Compact? Length and storage: 214cm against 90cm, three drawers against two, and room for people at the top. The Compact stands 92.5cm high; this one is 94cm.

Does it sit with other Vancouver pieces? Yes. The three-door sideboard and two-door sideboard share the same timber and texture.

Can I judge the texture from photos? Only up to a point. The mill-saw texture is something you feel as much as see; call in and we’ll show you the finish, or email us and we’ll describe it properly.
